With the release of his new studio disc Memory Almost Full<\/em> last month, it only made sense to profile Paul McCartney as our July Artist of the Month.<\/p>\n

Some may question that choice. While Sir Paul undoubtedly helped create what is now called “pop” music, much of his output after the Beatles broke up has been called spotty, self-indulgent, precious or inconsequential. Certainly, bouncing musical ideas off of Linda McCartney and Denny Laine is far different than bouncing them off John Lennon.<\/p>\n

But McCartney’s role as a top-notch songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist and of course a founding Beatle who changed pop forever with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band<\/em> is certainly worth of his own month on the Vault. And for those who are wondering, we plan to give Lennon a month as well later this year.<\/p>\n

Because of the depth of his catalog, we will not focus on anything McCartney did prior to his solo debut in 1970. We also are skipping some of the live albums, hits collections and classical\/operatic outings of the 80s and 90s. Each day this month will focus on pretty much all of McCartney’s studio discs, both alone and with Wings.<\/p>\n

Wings, in fact, was McCartney’s attempt to be in a real touring rock band, which he had not been in since the Beatles quit touring in the mid-60s to retire to the studio. Paul had the most showmanship of the four Beatles and enjoyed the crowds, and so took the opportunity to form Wings with Laine and his wife Linda. The band recorded several hit albums that, while far from Beatle standards, were pretty good in their own right — Band On The Run, Ram, Venus And <\/em>Mars and the triple live Wings Over America<\/em>, a chart topper.<\/p>\n

When Wings broke up, Paul recorded a few more solo discs before beginning a period of dabbling in classical music. He would later return with the good-selling Back In The U.S<\/em>. double disc, which begat the recent studio releases Chaos And Creation In The Backyard<\/em> and 2007’s Memory Almost Full<\/em>.\u00a0 Our McCartney retrospective begins Wednesday, July 4 and will extend 24\/7 all the way through Friday, July 27.\u00a0 Many of these reviews of Paul’s work will appear here for the first time.<\/p>\n

Founded in January 1997, the Daily Vault has featured over 4,800 reviews of over 2,300 artists covering almost the entire musical spectrum, written by a volunteer review staff from around the world. Previous Artist Of The Month retrospectives have spotlighted the work of artists from Tori Amos to Frank Zappa, including the Beatles, Garth Brooks, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Pearl Jam and many others.
