However, the first two Iron Maiden records featured Paul Di’Anno on vocals. Due to his unpredictable, drug-fueled behavior, he was fired from the band in ’81, but found himself fronting plenty of other bands and doing solo work up until his death in 2024.

After years of deteriorating health, including being wheelchair bound for seven years, Di’Anno went to Croatia for knee surgery, which is where much of this DVD is focused.

When he arrives in Croatia, his legs are among the worst the doctors have seen. He has a lot of work to accomplish, and during the treatment KISS comes to visit him, which helps lift his spirits. The doctors don’t want to amputate, and perform other procedures to try to get him to walk. He ends up being able to walk using a walker in a clinical setting. Eventually, after being in Croatia for longer than anticipated, Di’Anno gets engaged and has to have a surgery that he’s not financially able to pay for. The crowdfunding money has run out as his treatment has dragged on for months by now.

Amazingly, his former band members in Iron Maiden cover the cost of his surgery and Di’Anno books a tour just a few months post-surgery. His doctor is confident he can do this tour with enough physical therapy. However, he stops doing his physical therapy, his voice isn’t working well enough to perform consistently and the tour is a challenge for him and everyone around him.

Members of Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus and many others are interviewed about the influence Di’Anno have had on them, and Di’Anno himself discusses the many problems he’s sorted through—drugs, jail, financial woes, being stabbed, shot, etc. The guy has just been surrounded by trouble his whole life.

Even though he was only present in Iron Maiden for a short period, Di’Anno left an indelible mark with his guttural, more punk-fueled vocals. On the tours shortly before his death, the fans are still lining up to hear him sing those early Iron Maiden songs. Ultimately, he never does walk again and dies from heart failure at age 66.

This was not an easy film to watch. At some points, you find Di’Anno’s personality endearing, and at others he’s downright rude to those who care for him the most. He certainly lived a complicated existence, but his influence on metal will always be present, and even in the most dire health, he wheeled himself on stage to sing for the fans.

The name Bruce Dickinson is instantly recognizable as the frontman for the legends Iron Maiden.
