{"id":35984,"date":"1998-08-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1998-08-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/live\/"},"modified":"1998-08-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1998-08-28T00:00:00","slug":"live","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/live\/","title":{"rendered":"Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To put it crudely, Erykah Badu&#8217;s &#8220;Neo-Soul&#8221; material on both<br \/>\n<i>Baduizm<\/i> and<br \/>\n<i>Live<\/i> is Jewel&#8217;s coffeehouse stuff set on rhythm and blues.<br \/>\nSometimes pretentious, sometimes poignant, Badu was perfect to<br \/>\nheadline Lilith Fair this summer. It&#8217;s obvious that<br \/>\n<i>Live<\/i> was released to capitalize on the tour; there&#8217;s little<br \/>\nnew material, most of it from<br \/>\n<i>Baduizm<\/i> with the rest of it being extended arrangements at<br \/>\nthe most..<\/p>\n<p>Soul Music doesn&#8217;t put up sophisticated aires; the &#8220;soul&#8221; part<br \/>\nin Neo-Soul always sounded like the artists involved are comparing<br \/>\nthemselves to the likes of Aretha Franklin or Chaka Khan. Badu has<br \/>\nthat contrived feel in &#8220;Next Lifetime&#8221; and &#8220;Ye Yo&#8221;, the only two<br \/>\nsongs sounding anywhere near Soul Music. Her cover of Khan&#8217;s &#8220;Stay&#8221;<br \/>\nexhibits her extraordinary voice (held in check for most of the<br \/>\nalbum) but doesn&#8217;t bring anything to the original; the voice sounds<br \/>\nsimilar, but what else?<\/p>\n<p>Pretentions aside, the bare-bones synthesis of jazz and blues<br \/>\nmakes for an experimental side of R&#038;B hard to find nowadays.<br \/>\nThe near-scatting of &#8220;Apple Tree&#8221; can make any no-rhythm foot<br \/>\ntapping to time. &#8220;On &#038; On&#8221; uses bazaar imagery along with its<br \/>\nbazaar lyrics (&#8220;cipher keeps rolling like a rolling stone&#8221;) to set<br \/>\nthe quasi-exotic mood for the rest of the album. This is not your<br \/>\nBillboard variety of predictable grooves and recycled lyrics;<br \/>\nR&#038;B listeners are kept on the edges of their ears to catch<br \/>\nevery innovative phrasing, which<br \/>\n<i>Live<\/i> has a satisfying abundance of (as there was in<br \/>\n<i>Baduizm<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>The standout track shows potential to this Neo-Soul thing;<br \/>\n&#8220;Tyrone&#8221; brings fresh air into the tepid, overused repertoire of<br \/>\nR&#038;B lyrics (think Babyface) without going all artsy on us<br \/>\n(Missy Elliot). Terry McMillan could&#8217;ve penned the relevant,<br \/>\nrespect-conscious piece. Too bad the studio version overdoes the<br \/>\nrecord-static effects in their atempt to make it sound &#8217;70s<br \/>\ngroovy.<\/p>\n<p>I know I&#8217;ve said all that in the beginning of this review but I<br \/>\nactually like this album. Innovation is too rare in R&#038;B to<br \/>\nsimply ignore.
