Way back in March, I dared to utter pure sacrilege in these
\npages. Yup – I dared to say that a Cream album was not worth
\nlistening to – specifically, their debut effort
\nFresh Cream<\/i>. Much to my surprise, the hate mail was not
\noverwhelming.<\/p>\n
The trio of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker has always
\nbeen called a band of three virtuosos slugging it out for the
\nspotlight. On their first album, it just seemed like very few of
\nthe pieces were in place, and the end result was a musical
\nfree-for-all.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, their follow-up album
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i> is a major step in the right direction,
\nthough it’s still not perfect. But it does lead the group into the
\nrealm of superstardom, particularly with the song “Sunshine Of Your
\nLove”. Incredibly overplayed over the years, when taken in the
\ncontext of this album, the song does gain a new set of legs. (In
\nfact, this is something I’ve noticed about many songs that classic
\nrock stations have bludgeoned to death.)<\/p>\n
Even from the opening track “Strange Brew,”
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i> will have you scratching your head and
\nwondering, “Is this the same band that did ‘I Feel Free’?” The
\nanswer is “yes,” only they’re now that much better, having learned
\neach other’s ideosyncracies – part of the learning process of all
\nbands. Now that Bruce’s bass and vocals know how to merge with
\nClapton’s guitar and vocals, and how Baker’s drum work fits into
\nthe whole process, Cream comes into their own on
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i>.<\/p>\n
Of the three well-known tracks from this album, “Swlabr” is the
\nhidden gem. (Does anyone have a clue what in the hell that title is
\nsupposed to mean? E.C., you reading? You wanna explain it to me?)
\nMore intricate rhythms and interplay between the instruments, as
\nwell as a solid vocal delivery from Bruce (which is sometimes as
\nnonsensical as the title) make this one a real charmer. I don’t
\nwant to knock “Strange Brew,” however; again, in the environment of
\nthis album, the song comes into its own.<\/p>\n
However, the heart of
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i> isn’t in the songs we all know, it’s in the
\nsongs that never made it to radio. Tracks like “Dance The Night
\nAway,” “Blue Condition” and “Outside Woman Blues” show how much
\nthis band has grown and improved since their first album, and it is
\ntruly more fun to listen to and experience. (I would challenge
\nprogram directors from classic rock stations to take one or two of
\nthese tracks and throw them on for your listeners; they are strong
\nenough to possibly rekindle an interest in Cream.)<\/p>\n
Still, there are some stumbling points on
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i>, though they’re nowhere near as major as the
\nones on
\nFresh Cream<\/i>. “Tales Of Brave Ulysses” has never been a
\nfavorite of mine, and is the one song whose inclusion on the
\ngreatest-hits disc
\nStrange Brew: The Very Best Of Cream<\/i> I question. And while I
\nrecognize that “Mother’s Lament” is meant to be a throw-away track
\ncut for fun, it could have easily been left off this disc. Still,
\npoints like these are minor.<\/p>\n
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i> is the type of album that quickly restored my
\nfaith in Cream’s supergroup status. But the band had merely dipped
\ntheir toes in the pool of fame; the big hits like “Badge” and
\n“White Room” still were ahead of them. But for now,
\nDisraeli Gears<\/i> is the best place for you to start your
\neducation on Cream. Who knows, even the “old-timers” might just
