After catching the movie
\nDogma<\/i>, I was inspired to put on another work by an artist
\nwho has been known to piss off the Catholic church: Madonna. With
\nthe possible exception of
\nTrue Blue…<\/i> wait, scratch even that exception. Madonna was
\nknown for creating some great pop songs in the ’80s, but she never
\nquite mastered making an album that fully captured all of her
\ntalents.<\/p>\n
However, like all artists with this deficiency, a “greatest
\nhits” collection is a wonderful thing. And
\nThe Immaculate Collection<\/i> is a damn near flawless greatest
\nhits collection. The ’80s and early ’90s Madonna is immortalized in
\n17 classic songs. Beginning with “Holiday,” you can hear Madonna
\nstart to take more musical risks as she got more successful.<\/p>\n
“La Isla Bonita” stands as one of the more experimental pop hits
\nthat Madonna had in the ’80s. But a casual listener can tell that
\nMadonna could make both dance hits as well as believable ballads.
\nThe diva certainly shines on tracks like “Express Yourself” and
\n“Vogue.” But songs like “Crazy For You” show a more vulnerable side
\nto Madonna.<\/p>\n
With 17 tracks of her best songs, listeners will no doubt side
\nwith either the beginning, middle or end of this collection. For
\nme, “Material Girl” represents Madonna at her campy best. Her
\ncourage to express her religous convictions with the song “Like A
\nPrayer” also cannot be denied.<\/p>\n
Those who bought
\nRay Of Light<\/i> already know that Madonna has a certain knack
\nfor incorporating popular styles of music into her own. The growing
\npopularity (then) of rap caught Madonna’s attention with the song,
\n“Justify My Love.” Thankfully, she doesn’t rap, but she does
\nincorporate a bass-heavy, stark, throbbing beat as the underlying
\nbeat to the song.<\/p>\n
It’s hard not to give this album an “A,” but there’re some songs
\nthat I naturally skip over. But the songs I don’t particularly
\nlike, I know still are standard bearers in the world of pop and
\ndance. And
\nThe Immaculate Collection<\/i> does a great job at showing all of
\nMadonna’s strengths and few of her weaknesses.<\/p>\n
To totally dismiss Madonna is both ignorant and short-sighted.
\nHer incorporation of up-and coming sounds (rap, techno) have made
\ncountless people pick up music in a genre where they may not picked
\nup before. And
\nThe Immaculate Collection<\/i> is a great starter CD for any
