That vice of fame, that restrictive grip of fan and commercial
\nexpectation is off of Pearl Jam, for now. Far too many people are
\ngoing to monitor whether Ms. Spears lastest album will catch up to
\nN*Sync this week.<\/p>\n
As a band, Pearl Jam have become more and more expansive in
\ntheir sound since
\nVitalogy<\/i>. Their reliance on experimentism paid off in spades
\nwith
\nYield<\/i>, perhaps their second-best album in their catalog.
\nDrummer Jack Irons opened up Pearl Jam’s sound and gave free reign
\nfor guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready and bassist Jeff
\nAment to fill up the gaps with some of their finest moments. Now,
\narmed with ex-Soundgarden drummer, Matt Cameron, Pearl Jam could
\nnot be in better hands in the rhythm department.<\/p>\n
But, as
\nYield<\/i> was a wide-eyed, expressive and open account of
\nVedder’s want to communicate again with the outside world,
\nBinaural<\/i> signals more of a traditional, and sometimes safer
\npath. With tracks like “Nothing As It Seems,” “Grievance” and
\n“Breakerfall,” Pearl Jam seem to be more concered with just rocking
\nout than developing any major song structures.<\/p>\n
It shouldn’t startle that
\nBinaural<\/i> is somewhat of a letdown. Don’t get me wrong, it is
\nworth the purchase, and I’m sure it will grow with repeated
\nlistens. But on
\nBinaural<\/i>, Pearl Jam didn’t have as much conflict as they are
\ntypically accustomed to. Their best material has come out of
\nconflict. The anger of being pegged as “Seattle\/grunge\/angst
\nspokespersons” came bleeding out in
\nVs.<\/i> They lashed out at the commercial failure of
\nNo Code<\/i> with the glorious and humane
\nYield<\/i>.<\/p>\n
With
\nYield<\/i>‘s success, sort of, the pressure was off on Pearl Jam.
\nIt also didn’t hurt that they had their biggest hit in their career
\nlast year when they covered “Last Kiss.” As a result, the members
\nwere fairly free to noodle about and experiment with their own
\nsounds. As a band, this helps in the long run. Each member had
\neither a songwriting or music credit for each of the songs on
\nBinaural<\/i>.<\/p>\n
However, for every time this works, there’s bound to be some
\nruts in the road. And
\nBinaural<\/i> has some of those moments. “Rival” just seems to
\ncollapse in on itself and lose steam. “Insignificance,” though a
\npretty song unto itself, just doesn’t have that gorgous sweep of
\n“Wishlist” or “Betterman.” Pearl Jam fans are not looking for
\nsequels to these songs, but most expect that passion to be there in
\neach of Pearl Jam’s songs.<\/p>\n
Still, lots of things work on
\nBinaural<\/i>. “Thin Air” has to be one of the most beautiful
\nsongs the band has ever recorded. And the fitting coda, “Parting
\nWays,” shines with Vedder’s unmistakable aura. The lyrics are
\nfairly simplistic: “Behind her eyes there’s curtains\/And they’ve
\nbeen closed to hide the flames.” And most of the album is fairly
\nsimplistic, lyric wise. On “Light Years,” Vedder moans, “Every inch
\nbetween us becomes light years now.” But, Vedder is gifted enough
\nof a songwriter to make these words seem profound. And like a
\ntypical Pearl Jam album, fast forward a little from the final track
\nand you’ll get a treasured oddity.<\/p>\n
Like an ace sports team in a rebuilding year,
\nBinaural<\/i> seems to come from a band that’s content with
\nhanging in the background while the bubblegum scene seems to devour
\neach other. It seems though that the band didn’t put the throttle
\ndown and waited a bit for Matt Cameron to ease his way into the
\nband. He’ll be a welcome addition. And the highlights of
\nBinaural<\/i> show that another classic album from their catalog
\nmay be an album away. Until then,
\nBinaural<\/i> is enough to tide fans over. It’s Pearl Jam. But
