After setting musical trends for nearly 20 years, Madonna finds
\nherself in a unique position this time around – she’s the one
\nbehind the eight-ball.<\/p>\n
Her latest album,
\nMusic<\/i>, all but abandons the trip-pop style of music that
\nmarked her last release
\nRay Of Light<\/i> for a dive into sparse techno beats and
\nannoying use of devices like the vocoder. She sounds as out of
\nplace as she looks in her K-mart western wear she sports on the
\ncover.<\/p>\n
Working again with producer William Orbit (as well as French
\nwunderkind<\/i> Mirwais this time around), Madonna finds herself
\nchasing the tails of artists like Cher who have captured the
\nessence of popular music today through dance-oriented top 40. She
\nalso seems like she’s trying to outgun the latest
\n“Baby-One-More-Genie-In-A-Larger-Than-Life-Bottle” by trying to
\nbecome hip. What Madonna forgot in the process is that she doesn’t
\nneed<\/i> to prove herself after all these years… nor does she
\nhave to try and sound hip.<\/p>\n
The title track is symbolic of the trouble this album is in from
\nth get-go. This variation on a single G-chord, with nothing more
\nthan an electronic beat and light synthesizer work backing up
\nMadonna’s vocals, makes it sound like she was given a
\nsynthesizer\/drum machine for Christmas, and she used this song to
\nlearn how to program the basics of the machine.<\/p>\n
\nMusic<\/i> shows off a Madonna who is confused as to which
\ndirection she should go with her music. “Runaway Lover” tries to
\nmove her back to the direction of
\nRay Of Light<\/i>, but the lyric “You’re set adrift with no
\ndirection \/ Just like a ship that’s lost at sea”… well, that
\nseems to sum up Madonna’s dilemma.<\/p>\n
The vocoder is overused just by its sheer presence on
\nMusic<\/i> – cripes, Madonna has one of the best voices in pop
\nmusic, so why ruin it with a computer? “Impressive Instant” and
\n“Nobody’s Perfect” show just how annoying this device can be. Even
\nsongs which are being targeted by outsiders as singles, such as
\n“What It Feels Like For A Girl,” just don’t have enough substance
\nto allow them to stand on their own.<\/p>\n
“Paradise (Not For Me)”… you know, there was a time when
\nrecord companies saved the extended remixes for the 12-inch
\nsingles… oh, wait, this
\nis<\/i> the track. This track can be summed up in one simple
\nword: boring.<\/p>\n
Yet
\nMusic<\/i> is not without hope. “I Deserve It” may be lacking in
\ninstrumentation, but it is the first sign that not everything is
\ngoing south. A powerful vocal performance and introspective lyrics
\nsave this one. Likewise, “Amazing” is the song which mirrors
\n“Beautiful Stranger” from the
\nAustin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me<\/i> soundtrack, and is
\nreminiscent of the direction many thought Madonna would take on
\nthis album.<\/p>\n
So what went wrong with
\nMusic<\/i>? I personally don’t think Mirwais helped; if anything,
\nhis presence clouds the direction of the album, and sets Madonna
\nback. Had she worked solely with Orbit, maybe he could have brought
\nout more in the music.<\/p>\n
\nMusic<\/i> is an album that strikes a bad chord with me, and
\nsuggests that Madonna has lost sight of the musical ideals she
\nrediscovered on
\nRay Of Light<\/i>. Did I expect or want this to be a carbon-copy
\nfollow-up? No… besides, that isn’t Madonna’s style. But let’s all
