In the liner notes to
\nWoody’s Roundup<\/i>, a collection of music used in or related to<\/p>\n
Toy Story 2<\/i>, director John Lasseter admits that they wanted
\nto go for a retro-feel to the show that created Woody in the ’50s
\n(according to the script of
\nToy Story 2<\/i>). Indeed, if you’re a member of the Baby Boomer
\ngeneration (which I am not), hearing the real-life Western group
\nRiders In The Sky voicing these songs should bring back memories of
\nthe early days of television.<\/p>\n
Let’s state for the record what Lasseter basically admits in the
\nliner notes:
\nWoody’s Roundup<\/i> is not meant to be a soundtrack to
\nToy Story 2<\/i>. Instead, what this album does is twofold for
\nsomeone like Lasseter. First, it ties together the theme of the
\n’50s TV show with music from an authentic Western group. Second, it
\ngave Lasseter the chance to work with people who he now calls
\nfriends.<\/p>\n
Okay, you’re thinking, but what does this mean for
\nme<\/i>, the listener? I’m glad you asked, ’cause this is the
\nkind of album that has enough charm for the kids and the parents
\nalike.
\nWoody’s Roundup<\/i> is just a lot of fun.<\/p>\n
The kids will eat this disc up thanks to all the references to
\ntheir favorite characters from
\nToy Story 2<\/i>, including Woody, Jessie, Bullseye, “Stinky”
\nPete the Prospector… and even references to some of the original
\nToy Story<\/i> characters (most notably on “My Favorite
\nToys”.<\/p>\n
For the adults, not only is
\nWoody’s Roundup<\/i> a disc which will evoke memories of your
\nchildhood, but it will also give you an enjoyable half-hour with
\nsome true Western music – the way Roy Rogers would have done it if
\nhe were still alive. I refer to Rogers mainly because of the track
\n“How Does She Yodel?”; I don’t remember what tape of an old-time
\nradio show it was, but I remember hearing Rogers singing during it
\nand breaking into a yodel. (Or maybe it was “The Muppet Show”; the
\nmemories get fuzzy.)<\/p>\n
And, c’mon, for someone who smacks down more discs for hidden
\ntracks than a professional wrestler abusing his opponent, how can
\nyou not like a hidden track labeled, “Shhh! A Secret Bonus Track!”?
\nSomeone at Disney has obviously been paying attention to my
\nrants.<\/p>\n
The only track I couldn’t get into was “Act Naturally” – not
\nthat Riders In The Sky did a poor job, but only because I’m so used
\nto different versions that it’s hard for me to adapt to new takes
\non old favorites.<\/p>\n
There’s a reason why
\nWoody’s Roundup<\/i> was nominated for a Grammy this year – and a
\ngood deal of the credit should to to Riders In The Sky for making
\nthis music come alive. Lasseter knew what he was doing when he
\nselected them to sing “Woody’s Roundup” in
\nToy Story 2<\/i>, and having them make a companion album is an
