There is no doubt that Glenn Hughes is one of the most talented
\nvoices in hard rock today. His stints with Black Sabbath, Deep
\nPurple and Hughes\/Thrall Band all are evidence to this.<\/p>\n
So why is Hughes’s latest disc,
\nReturn Of Crystal Karma<\/i>, so
\nboring<\/i>? This is a guy who is capable of so much better; pity
\nhe didn’t offer it on this set.<\/p>\n
Oh, let’s be fair and share the wealth – it’s not always
\nHughes’s fault. Often, his band – guitarist JJ Marsh, keyboardist
\nHans Zermuehlen and drummer Gary Ferguson – just don’t seem like
\nthey have the interest in the material, and thus can’t make it
\nsound interesting for the listener. (I’m leaving Lol Tolhurst out
\nof this group clambake, since he only contributed to one track. No
\nsense taking bullets meant for someone else.)<\/p>\n
And it’s not that
\nReturn Of Crystal Karma<\/i> is consistently a bad disc. The
\ninstrumental track “Owed To ‘J'” is a wonderful work which does
\nshow how good this group of musicans can be. Likewise, the disc’s
\ncloser “Days Of Avalon” (and, to a lesser extent, “Angela” and
\n“This Life”) offer proof that Hughes could well be one of the
\nleast-acclaimed talents of his time.<\/p>\n
But all of that goes to the side due to the mediocrity of the
\nremainder of the material. Tracks such as “The State I’m In,”
\n“Switch The Mojo,” “Gone” and “The Other Side Of Me” almost lull
\nthe listener to sleep – not the best result Hughes could have hoped
\nfor. The material on this disc was supposed to be Hughes’s return
\nto harder-edged music; instead, it’s the musical equivalent of a
\nnice, comfy mattress.<\/p>\n
If this wasn’t enough, early copies of
\nReturn Of Crystal Karma<\/i> are packaged with a bonus disc,
\nLive In South America<\/i> – proof positive that Hughes can be
\njust as God-awful dull live as he can in the studio. ‘Nuff
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\nReturn Of Crystal Karma<\/i> is a wasted attempt to show the
\nworld what a talent they’ve been overlooking all these years.
\nChances are many people aren’t going to stop and pay attention to
