Truth be told, I like Blues Traveler. I liked Blues Traveler
\nbefore they were cool; when I was working in small-market rock
\nradio in the very early ’90s, I got blown away by
\nTravelers And Thieves<\/i>; that was a long time before the chart
\njuggernaut of
\nFour<\/i>. Somehow I lost touch with the band sometime after
\nthat; I didn’t pick up
\nStraight On Till Morning<\/i>, I missed the Great John Popper
\nAngioplasty And Resulting Slimdown, and I don’t recall hearing
\nanything off
\nBridge<\/i>, the first release after the tragic overdose and
\ndeath of bassist Bobby Sheehan. There’s been a lot of water under
\nthe bridge for Blues Traveler since I kept sneaking “All In The
\nGroove” on the air despite my program director’s best intentions.
\n(Come to think of it, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge
\nfor me. But that’s another story.)<\/p>\n
Got some news for ya, y’all. Blues Traveler is back. Hell, they
\nmay have never left.
\nTruth Be Told<\/i>, their latest release and the first one on
\nSanctuary Records, is tight, tasty, and a damned fine work.<\/p>\n
If I have a complaint with Blues Traveler, it’s the same
\ncomplaint I have with a lot of jam bands; they sometimes lose focus
\nand wander musically. Not so here, O Ye DV Faithful.
\nTruth Be Told<\/i> is a musical fastball, focused, energetic, and
\npowerful. The production is excellent, the mix is perfectly
\nbalanced, and the musicianship is nonpareil. Tragedy seems pretty
\nfar behind BT, and the results are exceptional.<\/p>\n
Tracks worthy of note include the opening, the powerful “Unable
\nTo Get Free”; the rollicking yet bittersweet acoustic guitar of
\n“Sweet And Broken” (with a nominee for Lyric Of The Year: ‘She
\nsmokes my last cigarette \/\/ She forgives me, but I don’t know it
\nyet’); the seventies wocka-wocka guitar of “My Blessed Pain”; one
\nof the best bass parts in rock this year, “Can’t See Why”; Popper’s
\ngreat harp on “Stumble And Fall” .. OK, let’s face it, there isn’t
\na weak spot on this CD. On
\nTruth Be Told<\/i>, Blues Traveler has delivered one of the best
\nrock CDs of the year; smooth as honey, bluesy as a smoky
\nhole-in-the-wall, and triumphant as sunrise. This one is truly
\ngreat.<\/p>\n
