What an album! – Amicable and brilliant. This album reminds me
\nof a four-wheel drive SUV bought at a rock-bottom price. This album
\ncan please anyone, of any music taste. When
\nPlay<\/i> was released, Moby was kind of an underground artist \/
\nproducer. His earlier albums like
\nAnimal Rights<\/i> enjoyed very little popularity and success.
\nEven
\nPlay<\/i> was a sluggish starter. It had its own unique sound:
\ndisco (nothing extravagant) songs, with sampled vocals from songs
\nof antediluvian age. In a way,
\nPlay<\/i> was meant to be an ‘underground’ album.<\/p>\n
Well,
\nPlay<\/i> ultimately turned out to be one of the hottest dance
\nalbums of the last decade. How then could a supposedly offbeat
\nalbum become such a humongous success? The answer is its
\nuniversally appealing sound. The music is so uncomplicated and
\nunpretentious that you fall in love with it, the very first time
\nyou listen to it. Dance music has never been so simple and humble.
\nIt seems as if techno has finally found an answer to Bob Dylan.<\/p>\n
None of the eighteen tracks on
\nPlay<\/i> extend beyond the four-and-a-half minutes length – the
\nlength of a standard ‘single’ song. Though Moby has experimented,
\nas far as the inclusion of ‘retro’ sound-bytes in some of the songs
\nof the album is concerned, he hasn’t gone overboard with the
\nexperimentation-bit, as far as the musical complexity of the album
\ngoes – simple, but richly melodious tunes, is the formula behind
\nevery song on
\nPlay<\/i>.<\/p>\n
\nPlay<\/i> is an album, which can be listened to, whilst one is
\ngoing on a long drive. It also fits snugly under the rubric of
\nthose albums, which are supposed to be taken seriously. Also, it is
\na fantastic party-album. In addition, its songs enhance the appeal
\nof a good visual – as is evident by the fact that almost all the
\nsongs on
\nPlay<\/i> have found themselves as background scores for a good
\nnumber of commercials. Adding to all this, the well-written essays
\nincluded in the cd booklet, written by Moby himself, and the
\nenlightening quotes of famous people, also included along with the
\nessays, come as perquisites to the quality numbers in this album.
\nConsidering its well-mannered nature,
\nPlay<\/i> is a ‘concept’ album’s greatest nemesis. With a mixture
\nof style, substance and versatile appeal, and of course the
\ninteresting reading material on the cd booklet,
\nPlay<\/i> is indeed a four-wheel drive SUV, as far as music is
