Of all the albums released in 1970, Moondance<\/i> has to top the lists as one of the best. It also made the mainstream aware of a then-unknown artist named Van Morrison.<\/p>\n
Morrison’s third release is quite a departure from his much darker Astral Weeks<\/i>; this album is a happy one but still with a folk feel. Plain and simple, there are no weak tracks on this album. Each song flows well, with a great acoustic guitar and catchy piano and Morrison’s exceptional voice over the top. After all the brutal metal I usually listen to, Morrison’s serene voice is a nice change. Songs like “Into the Mystic” and “Caravan” are fun little ditties, while “And it Stoned Me” and the title track are pure, undiluted brilliance.<\/p>\n
After heavy listening and re-listening to this record, I can find but one fault: it’s too short at 10 tracks. I wanted more, which is probably the greatest thing about the album — you can listen to it over and over again, for the whole day if you like, and you’ll never get tired of it. If anything, the songs become more and more likeable with each spin. I’m not a big fan of folk music, but of the very few folk albums I’ve listened to this is easily the best I’ve heard from the genre.<\/p>\n
Much like Astral Weeks, Moondance <\/i>is one of the truly great records out there, easily one of the best records of 1970. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then believe me when I say this is the first positive review I’ve written for a non-metal album.
