I can’t see anything wrong with sex between consenting
\nanybodies. I think we make far too much of it.<\/p>\n
That’s what Marvin Gaye wrote in the liner notes to introduce
\nhis album
\nLet’s Get it On<\/i>, arguably the king of make-out albums.
\nHowever, its greatness is also intimidating. Typically, love making
\nis never as smooth, sultry and flat-out sensual as this 30-minute
\ngroove fest.<\/p>\n
Gaye’s socially-conscious work,
\nWhat’s Going On<\/i>, and
\nLet’s Get it On<\/i> made one of the most powerful social
\nstatements of the ’70s. One album looked on with a sense of
\ndefeatism as he saw social injustice destroying the world. It was a
\ngreat testament of an artist looking outward and trying to make
\nsense of his world. With
\nLet’s Get it On<\/i>, Gaye shifts the focus inward.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, over-commercialism has not been kind to this
\nalbum. It’s hard not to have your mind play back scores of bad
\ncommercials with the title track. Pepsi, pet products, insurance
\ncompanies, dammit, this is not what Gaye was aiming for when he
\nrecorded “Let’s Get it On.” Still, the album had all of the Motown
\nsignatures: jazzy instrumentation, butter-smooth vocals and
\ngorgeous production.<\/p>\n
Even though the album has a certain\u2026theme to it, Gaye’s
\ndemons occasionally creep into the album, namely in the song, “If I
\nShould Die Tonight.” Gaye’s tragic death makes the song all the
\nmore chilling. His ability to provoke is demonstrated in “You Sure
\nLove to Ball” — opening with the moaning ecstasy of a certain
\nlady. It’s pretty harmless in today’s world, but thirty years ago
\n— eyebrows were likely raised by many who preferred Gaye’s more
\ntraditional forays into soul.<\/p>\n
The album ends with “Just to Keep You Satisfied” — with Gaye
\ncrooning, “It’s too late, babe\u2026” If there’s a flaw to
\nLet’s Get it On<\/i>, it’s in its relative briefness and
\nsimilarity of songs. The listener has eight, basic dead-on ballads.
\nIt’s ironic that this album is considered to be the epitome of
\nromantic albums, since it was recorded in a haze of pot smoke by an
\nartist who was constantly battling his inner demons. But Gaye’s
