All right, the Che Madonna revolutionary look she donned for her<\/p>\n
American Life<\/i> LP is rather silly, and the Britney kiss was
\nas embarrassing as Michael Jackson smooching Lisa Marie a decade
\nearlier on MTV. But for a woman who has undergone countless
\ntransformations, you can forgive some of her over ambitious
\nfailures. Still, some of Madonna’s critics, especially social
\nconservatives, have made the critical mistake of calling Madonna a
\n“has-been.” Has-been? Hardly.<\/p>\n
\nAmerican Life<\/i> is a weak album, but it’s coming off the
\nstrongest one-two punch in Madonna’s lengthy career:
\nRay Of Light<\/i> and 2000’s
\nMusic<\/i>. And while
\nRay Of Light<\/i> was arguably Madonna’s finest hour, it
\noccasionally sank under new-agey mysticism because of her gung-ho
\nembracement of the Kabbalah.
\nMusic<\/i> represents all of the techno vibe that so works for
\nMadonna while shaking off
\nLight<\/i>‘s occasional self-important bloating.<\/p>\n
The album starts off with the instant-classic title track.
\nBacked up by a fun, cheeky bass line, and an overly feminine intro
\nof “Heyah Mr. DJ,” the song can bring a spring in the step of even
\nthe straightest Lynyrd Skynyrd-listening alpha male. William Orbit,
\nthe mega-producer behind
\nRay Of Light<\/i>, is on hand for this album, but the majority of
\nthe production work goes to French producer Mirwais.<\/p>\n
\nMusic<\/i> is the loosest album in Madonna’s career. The album’s
\nfreeness enables her to sing a line as hokey as “I like to singy
\nsingy singy\/ like a bird on a wingy wing wingy” without losing the
\nmood of the dirty, grinding beats set in “Impressive Instant.” It’s
\nmoments like these when you forget the singer is that club-going
\ngirl from Detroit in the mid-’80s. And her ability to actually
\ncreate a great ‘whole’ album as opposed to a series of great
\nsingles puts her miles above other aging divas, such as Cher and
\nWhitney Houston.<\/p>\n
Music does run into some ruts. When Madonna tries to go serious,
\nlike “I Deserve It” and the lackluster final two tracks, the album
\nslides. It would have been a much greater payoff if Madonna kept
\nthe bumpy, fun spirit of some of the best tracks on
\nMusic<\/i> pulsating throughout the entire album. The only
\nexceptions to this are on “Don’t Tell Me” and “What it Feels Like
\nFor a Girl.” Still, there are at least a half-dozen remixes that
\nare superior to “What it Feels Like\u2026” The same can’t be said
\nfor “Don’t Tell Me” — the clean, stuttering guitar line is the
\nstuff of repeat listens. Even after heavy circulation on adult
\ncontemporary radio, the song is still immensely listenable, just
\nignore the lyrical corn like “take the black off the crow.”<\/p>\n
Madonna’s been through worse publicity than
\nAmerican Life<\/i> (hello
\nSex<\/i> book). And with Cher and Tina Turner still selling out
\nvenues when they are in their 50s and 60s, there’s no way Madonna
\nis going to be leaving the music world anytime soon, much to the
\ndismay of the Rush Limbaughs and Bill O’Reillys of the world. In
\nfact, it was around 1998 when the music world was ready to write
\noff Madonna as a has-been before she dropped
\nRay Of Light<\/i>. Her ability to shock may have waned since the
\nearly ’90s, but anyone doubting her ability to surprise need only
