Born in celebration of the Hellacopters’ ten years of existence,
\nthe six song EP release of
\nStrikes Like Lightning<\/i> punctuated a recent November
\nanniversary party held by the band in their hometown of Stockholm,
\nSweden.<\/p>\n
Judging by the artwork of this album in comparison with the Knee-jerk reactions are only occasionally as painful as the term Vocally speaking, most of the songs on this album have Nicke By and large though, the Hellacopters have come up with some All in all, In conclusion, I can say to Hellacopters fans that it is safe to As a sidenote, the band in characteristic fashion has also
\nband’s last full length release,
\nBy The Grace Of God<\/i>, and coupled with the fact that the
\nHellacopters have been on a near year recording and touring hiatus,
\nit would be easy to draw the conclusion that these songs were the
\nscraps left over from that 2002 effort. So, maybe I’m just an
\noverly skeptical sort but I can tell you that this was my thought
\nbefore recently picking up a copy of this E.P. Based on my previous
\nreview of the
\nBy The Grace Of God<\/i> album
\non this website<\/a> it should be easy
\nto see why I would be wary of such a connection.<\/p>\n
\nsuggests. So it’s fortunate that I am finding that
\nStrikes Like Lightning<\/i> has plenty of moments that
\ndifferentiate it from its largely sterile predecessor.<\/p>\n
\nAndersson sounding rather pop-stream in his delivery. From my
\nperspective that might sound like a bummer, but I can positively
\nsay that outside of “A View From Nowhere” each time it looks like
\nAndersson is getting complacent with such a stagnant vocal pitch,
\nsome new dynamic such as a biting guitar riff steers the song into
\na more interesting direction. Additionally, the complacent approach
\nin “A View From Nowhere” falls into a short but sweet handclap
\nprocession that ups the track’s boogie factor — even if only for a
\nbrief spell.<\/p>\n
\nriffs on this release that up the overall tempo and vibe when
\ncompared to
\nBy The Grace Of God<\/i>. In addition to feeling rather soulful
\nwhile listening to the wooo-oooh’s from the backing vocals on
\n“Blinded By The Light,” the well defined bass line on “Fiends And
\nFrankensteins” and the continual upbeat tempo found on the song “On
\nThe Line” tempt me to want to rock out a bit.<\/p>\n
\nStrikes Like Lightning<\/i> is a pretty solid E.P. effort. Not in
\nthe way that the Hellacopters’
\nDisappointment Blues<\/i> has been etched into my perpetual
\nconsciousness but in a manner that attempts to throw the band’s
\nsound back a notch to the days before
\nBy The Grace Of God<\/i> was recorded and released. I’m not even
\nsure there is a real bonafide hit on
\nStrikes Like Lightning<\/i> even though “Turn The Wrong Key” will
\nprobably have me one day taking a step back to reconsider this
\nclaim.<\/p>\n
\nknee jerk at the sight and realization that there are some obvious
\nsimilarities between
\nStrikes Like Lightning<\/i> and
\nBy The Grace Of God<\/i>. At worst, a mild sprain might develop
\nin doing such a thing; at best you’ll probably be like me and set
\nyour music player on repeat mode and walk away from the player.<\/p>\n
\nreleased
\nStrikes Like Lightning<\/i> as a part of a deluxe box set (three
\n7″ records) with other assorted trinkets on November 30. Limited to
\n3,000 copies worldwide on Sweet Nothing Records, the lack of any
\nreal weakness on these songs will surely make the box set an
\nessential addition to all vinyl-philes collections. Pick one up now
