Dogged by bandmate changes and general sloppy production, the
\nRed Hot Chili Peppers’s debut album was a mixed bag to say the
\nleast. Even though the Peppers were still infants to the Los
\nAngeles music scene, they had already gained a reputation of being
\none of the most intense live bands in the area; thanks to their
\nunique fusion of hardcore punk and funk.<\/p>\n
Things seemed better in 1985 when original guitarist Hillel
\nSlovak and drummer Jack Irons rejoined the Peppers after their band
\nWhat Is This fizzled. Old lineup back, near legendary status on the
\nstage and a debut album that, for all its flaws, still was exciting
\nenough to raise eyebrows \u2026 looks like its time to go in the
\nstudio and record an album.<\/p>\n
Riding high from this good karma, the Peppers scored a major
\ncoup by bringing in a producer who was perfect for the Red Hot
\nChili Peppers: George Clinton. The elder statesman of funk may not
\nhave been able to tame the Peppers, but he brought an infectious
\nenthusiasm that made their second album,
\nFreaky Styley<\/i>, a euphoric mess.<\/p>\n
Anthony Kiedis’s vocals were paper-thin, but they fit seemingly
\nperfect with Flea’s slap-happy bass and Irons’s staccato drumming.
\nAnyone looking for the introspectiveness of some of the Peppers’s
\nlater songs should probably seek another album. At this stage of
\ntheir careers, the Peppers were more interested in thrashing and
\nsinging about escapades that would be fit for a porno plotline.<\/p>\n
Their sense of humor definitely had some Zappa influence:
\n“Yertle the Turtle” and “Blackeyed Blonde” were songs that were
\nalmost more memorable for their titles than their content. Still,
\nClinton was able to at least get the Red Hot Chili Peppers focused
\non how great they could be when all cylinders fired.<\/p>\n
Even if you prefer the newer style the Chili Peppers have
\nexplored,
\nFreaky Styley<\/i> still merits an investment. The album was
\nresponsible for generating the Peppers’ first bonafide classic:
\n“Catholic School Girls Rule.”
\nFreaky Styley<\/i> was definitely not the Red Hot Chili Peppers’s
