Posthumous releases typically are patched-together works and are
\nusually compiled under the best intentions. Yes, people are going
\nto make more money off the artist, but generally, the people who do
\nthe compiling have a genuine respect for the musician. Still, my
\ngeneral consensus is that for about 90 percent of the time, an
\nartist leaves these tracks off of albums for a reason.<\/p>\n
In the case of
\nSandbox: The Music of Mark Sandman<\/i>, the compilation
\nrepresents Mark Sandman’s work with his bandmates from Morphine and
\nTreat Her Right. In addition,
\nSandbox<\/i> represents Sandman’s work with various artists he
\nbumped in to when he was mulling about the Boston scene, ducking
\ninto bars and absorbing the sounds of the city.<\/p>\n
Two distinct bands and some other musicians… already
\nSandbox<\/i> sounds like it could be a mess. However, with one
\nlisten you could easily mistake it for an ambitious double-album
\nrecorded by Mark Sandman as a solo project. In addition to some
\nsuperior recording quality, the general themes of solitude,
\ndangerous women and the love of the written word permeate virtually
\nall of the 30-plus songs on
\nSandbox<\/i>.<\/p>\n
In
\nSandbox<\/i>, the listener gets to hear virtually all of
\nSandman’s guises: the daydreamer (“I Can Do That”), the quirky
\nhumorist (“Riley the Dog”) and the romantic (“Get Along”). “Hotel
\nRoom,””Bathtub” and “Justine” have the smokey, late-night grooves
\nthat many Morphine fans have been accustomed to.<\/p>\n
No doubt hardcore Morphine\/Treat Her Right\/Mark Sandman fans
\nwill want to scoop up
\nSandbox<\/i>. However, even casual fans will want to check out
\nthis double-album. It goes far more than being a nostalgic piece to
\nSandman’s legacy. As a whole, the album is one of the few
\ndouble-length CDs that justifies the length.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately,
\nSandbox<\/i> is a bit hard to find at the moment. As of February
\n27, Hi-N-Dry.com’s Web site stated that
\nSandbox<\/i> will be unavailable until a final agreement is
\nreached between Ryko and Hi-N-Dry. The record label said there will
\nbe a resolution soon. Still, if you can find a local record store
\nthat currently stocks
\nSandbox<\/i>, by all means, pick it up. It’s an album worthy of a
