Memo to Jann Wenner: pull your head out of your ass and allow
\nChicago in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
There is no question that Chicago is one of the most underrated
\ngroups in rock history. According to
\nBillboard<\/i> charts, they are the second most successful band
\nin America rock history (though the statistics are up for debate).
\nRegardless of the exact numbers, Chicago has amassed over 20 Top
\nTen hits, five number one albums, and to this point 13 of their
\nalbums have hit the platinum level.<\/p>\n
Despite all of this, Chicago has remained underappreciated. In
\nthe ’60s and early ’70s, they were too “avant-garde.” From the late
\n’70s on to the present; they have been pegged as a “ballad band.”
\nThe truth of the matter is that Chicago was a rarity; a band that
\ncould shift among multiple styles to create their own unique brand
\nof rock and roll.<\/p>\n
\nChicago VII<\/i> was the follow-up to the commercial success that
\nwas the relatively lightweight effort
\nChicago VI<\/i>. However, the lack of critical acceptance, as
\nwell as the soft nature of the material on
\nVI<\/i> bugged the band, and they returned to the studio to
\nrecord an album that hearkened back to their earlier albums.
\nVII<\/i> most definitely is a throwback to albums such as
\nChicago II<\/i>,
\nChicago III<\/i>, and
\nChicago Transit Authority<\/i>. For one, the LP is a double
\nalbum, coincidentally the last one the band would record. The long,
\nsometimes overblown instrumentals return, and practically every
\nband member has a writing credit to their name, furthering the idea
\nof the “Chicago Democracy.”<\/p>\n
The musicianship of previous albums remains. The band shows off
\ntheir chops on the entire first side of the album, with
\n“Aire,””Devil’s Sweet” and “Italian From New York.” The problem is
\nthat these tracks run a bit long, and lose their momentum as a
\nresult. At times it seems the general idea was to bludgeon people
\nwith the idea that this wasn’t a band solely capable of recording
\ntracks in the vein of “Saturday In The Park.” These aren’t poorly
\nmade tracks; they just lack soul. The glaring exception is the
\nLatin-flavored “Mongonucleosis.” This track has become a live
\nfavorite, and justly so. One gets a sense of the band just cutting
\nloose, and jamming all night long.<\/p>\n
That said,
\nChicago VII<\/i> does indeed venture into pop territory, and this
\nis where the hits come in. “I’ve Been Searching So Long” and ”
\nWishing You Were Here” are fabulous tracks, the former featuring a
\nlush orchestral sound, the latter highlighting Chicago’s harmonies,
\nwith some brilliant help from The Beach Boys. The other hit off the
\nalbum, “Call On Me,” is one of those tracks that most people like,
\nbut I have never been able to get into. Sure there’s a nice beat,
\nbut the song borrows liberally from “Beginnings,” especially in the
\nclosing minute. “Happy Man” is a short, succinct, but strong ballad
\nfrom Peter Cetera and was also a minor hit.<\/p>\n
Terry Kath was the soul of the band, and his usually excellent
\nwork does not drop off here. “Women Don’t Want To Love Me”
\nunderscores how good Kath was at driving a song. His guitar licks
\nare echoed by the horns, and the rest of the band is more than
\nhappy to play along. “Byblos” allows Kath to show off his acoustic
\nskills, which are quite impressive. Kath’s role in the band had
\nstarted to decline, but he would remain a team player until his
\ntragic death in 1977.<\/p>\n
What prevents this album from being a great LP are the
\nextraneous instrumentals, and some plain old uninspired songs.
\nHowever, there are enough outstanding moments to make this one of
