\nFrom The Ground Up<\/i> is an all-acoustic record. In that
\nrespect, it isn’t much different from the “MTV Unplugged” records
\nthat were released by a few bands back in the nineties, with the
\nexception that this album has been recorded in a studio, instead of
\nin front of a live audience.<\/p>\n
This seven-song EP (or eight-song EP, including the hidden
\ntrack) finds the otherwise zesty Collective Soul in a relaxed mood,
\nwith the songs having an eased tempo.
\nFrom The Ground Up<\/i> does not try to be very ambitious. It is
\nnot the “acoustic” record —
\nJar Of Flies<\/i> — that Alice In Chains had put up, which was
\nwell laden with grand musical arrangements. It is just an album of
\nselected numbers from the band’s previous LPs, played without the
\nfrills of electric guitars, and done with the bare minimum
\ninstruments.<\/p>\n
Speaking of bare minimum instruments, “December” and “Counting
\nThe Days” are the only two numbers on the record having drums,
\nthough in rather toned-down forms. “December” has pianos, but the
\nrest of the album is just plain acoustic guitars and basses.<\/p>\n
Still, the album doesn’t prove to be a bore, even though it is
\nlaidback and slow. Its stripped simplicity doesn’t sound crude, but
\nrather refined.<\/p>\n
“December” and “Counting The Days,” the most decked-out numbers
\non
\nFrom The Ground Up<\/i>, are the album standouts. But, the less
\nadorned ones come close enough, so that they are not completely
\novershadowed by the standouts.<\/p>\n
Collective Soul is a band that has always been non-acoustic and
\nfast-paced. An album like
\nFrom The Ground Up<\/i> sets a different mood to the act’s peppy
\nnumbers, and for fans, it is an interesting collection of alternate
\nversions of songs they are familiar with.<\/p>\n
Though this record would be best enjoyed by those who know the
\noriginal versions of the songs, others will like it too, though not
