After the child-like psychedelia of
\nThe Piper At The Gates Of Dawn<\/i> and the subsequent acid
\nmeltdown of lead singer Syd Barrett, one wondered what would happen
\nto Pink Floyd. Would they suffer a similar musical meltdown, or
\nwould they be able to rise above the tragedy and come out
\nstronger?<\/p>\n
With the addition of guitarist David Gilmour to the fold, the
\nanswer seemed to be the latter, as
\nA Saucerful Of Secrets<\/i> proves to be a strong second outing
\nfrom the group. Admittedly, it is a bit of a change of pace,
\nespecially coming from Barrett’s almost prose-like style of
\nwriting, but it is a welcome addition to Pink Floyd’s musical
\nmenu.<\/p>\n
Granted, it seems like only the mid-level Floyd fans give this
\ndisc the attention it deserves, while hangers-on worship the
\npopular discs to the point of oversaturation. Yet
\nA Saucerful Of Secrets<\/i> proves to hold its own surprisingly
\nwell, especially with the lineup and minor stylistic changes.
\nTracks like “Remember A Day” and “Set The Controls For The Heart Of
\nThe Sun” are probably the best remembered, and rightfully so, as
\nthey are two strong outings that demonstrate the true power of the
\nre-vamped lineup. Likewise, Barrett’s lone contribution to the
\ndisc, “Jugband Blues,” does not feel out of place here; rather, it
\nalmost serves to act as a bridge between the two musical worlds
\nthat Pink Floyd was trying to straddle.<\/p>\n
Yet the standout track on this one, to my old ears, proves to be
\n“Corporal Clegg,” a track which does seem to act as the true
\nmid-point between the variations of Pink Floyd. A bit of a
\nchild-like sing-song combined with solid musicianship make this
\ntrack, undoubtedly, one of the least appreciated yet among the best
\nthat Pink Floyd has ever recorded.<\/p>\n
This isn’t to say that
\nA Saucerful Of Secrets<\/i> doesn’t take some getting used to;
\nthe nearly 12-minute title track tries to build on the psychedelia
\ncreated one album prior on “Interstellar Overdrive,” yet this time
\nit doesn’t quite catch on like it should. It’s not a bad track, but
\nit’s not as praise-worthy as one might expect.<\/p>\n
Looking back today, nearly 40 years after it was recorded, one
\ncan see the beginning of the road that Pink Floyd would travel to
\nget to such classics as
\nThe Dark Side Of The Moon<\/i>.
\nA Saucerful Of Secrets<\/i> was only the first step on that road,
