So, the bad news in 2004 was that Neko Case’s solo release was
\nnot a follow-up to her excellent 2002 release,
\nBlacklisted<\/i>. If you believe that live albums are an excuse
\nfor bands to milk more revenue from their fan’s pocketbooks, then
\nThe Tigers Have Spoken<\/i> will need to win you over.<\/p>\n
\nThe Tigers Have Spoken<\/i> was recorded in Chicago and Toronto
\nwith her crack backup band, The Sadies. The track list of
\nThe Tigers Have Spoken<\/i> automatically sets it apart from most
\nlive albums: only one song is from her last two albums. The rest of
\nthe songs are rarities and covers.<\/p>\n
The covers include Buffy Saint-Marie’s “Soulful Shade of Blue”
\nand Loretta Lynn’s “Rated X” (she returns the favor by doing a
\ncover of the Nervous Eaters’ Loretta Lynn-worshipping “Loretta”).
\nThe final two songs are staples of her excellent live shows: “This
\nLittle Light” and “Wayfaring Stranger.”<\/p>\n
Case’s new (or rare) material almost matches the quality of her
\ncovers. “If You Know” is a caution by a woman to her lover not to
\nsee a woman who threatens to ruin their relationship. “The Tigers
\nHave Spoken” has a good backstory, which Case explains at the end
\nof the album to the crowd.<\/p>\n
Neko Case’s background in punk, country and rock translate into
\na memorable concert experience. The Sadies add a loose, low-fi
\nstyle, which enables Case to fill in the gaps with her gorgeous
\nvocals. You may not get the concert experience with a CD, but
\nThe Tigers Have Spoken<\/i> comes close to capturing a Neko Case
\nshow.<\/p>\n
Still,
\nThe Tigers Have Spoken<\/i> is merely a very good live album.
\nIt’s not as memorable as more definitive albums, such as the Cowboy
\nJunkies’s
\n200 More Miles<\/i> or Johnny Cash’s prison recordings. It’s a
\ngood primer for folks new to Case’s music and a great purchase for
\nthose who have never seen her live. But in the end,
\nThe Tigers Have Spoken<\/i> is a forgettable album\u2026 a
