Right about during the middle of listening to Imagination, I
\nasked myself a question; is it fair for us to hold true artists to
\nan incredibly high standard? For example, many people judge the
\nBeatles’ solo works according to what they did as a group. Or what
\nabout an author like J.R.R. Tolkien, should his later other works
\nbe held against
\nLord Of The Rings<\/i>? I sat there pondering this, and decided
\nthat while it certainly isn’t fair, that’s life.<\/p>\n
Brian Wilson is responsible for two of the greatest albums in
\nrock history,
\nPet Sounds<\/i> and
\nSMiLE<\/i>. His earlier work with the Beach Boys is by no means
\nshabby either. So before listening to
\nImagination<\/i>, I had this notion that the record would have to
\nbe great. In retrospect, that wasn’t a wise choice on my part.
\nImagination<\/i> has some moments that recall Wilson’s heyday,
\nbut they are few and far between.<\/p>\n
The blame for this record lies at the feet of Joe Thomas, who
\nproduced
\nImagination<\/i>. Wilson usually produces himself, but for this
\nrecord he decided to work with Thomas, a former wrestler who was
\ngetting his feet wet in the music business. Big mistake, Mr.
\nWilson.<\/p>\n
On
\nImagination<\/i>, Thomas creates a different and unsuitable sound
\nfor a Brain Wilson record. There are no songs that really capture
\nthe complexity of, say, “Good Vibrations” or “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
\nInstead, the listener is presented with a very adult-contemporary,
\nacoustic-driven album that at times resembles some of the soulless
\ntripe of the ’80s, despite the fact
\nImagination<\/i> came out in 1998.<\/p>\n
The only two tracks to come relatively close to the old Wilson
\nsound are the first two of the CD. “Your Imagination,” sports some
\nof Wilson’s best vocal work since the early ’70s and has a strong
\nrefrain where Brian reminisces about the old days. “She Says That
\nShe Needs Me,” which was written by Wilson back in the ’70s,
\nfeatures some wonderful harmonies to be found, and some short
\norchestral interjections that hearken back what made Wilson famous
\nin the first place.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, trite lyrics and uninspired songwriting quickly
\nderail any momentum that
\nImagination<\/i> had going. “South American” sounds more like a
\nJimmy Buffett song than a Brian Wilson number (Buffett sings on
\nthis track, which may have played a part). “Happy Days” is supposed
\nto be the artsy offering, but with this production there is nothing
\navant-garde about it. Two Beach Boys songs get made over here,
\n“Keep An Eye On Summer,” and “Let Him Run Wild.” I have never heard
\nthe originals, but I can only assume they were done much
\nbetter.<\/p>\n
Finding the silver lining is easy; Brian Wilson sings his ass
\noff, doing both lead and harmony vocals. And not only does he sing
\nwell, he sings with passion, something lacking in his more recent
\nwork. Between the powerful desperation of “Cry,” and the soaring,
\nethereal voices of ” Where Has Love Been,” it’s almost enough to
\noverturn the negatives that Imagination offers.<\/p>\n
If Wilson took his vocals from
\nImagination<\/i>, and the music from
\nGetting In Over My Head<\/i>, we would have another classic Brian
\nWilson record. Unfortunately, until last year’s
\nSMiLE<\/i>, his solo work has been spotty, punctuated by
\ntremendous highs while simultaneously hitting the lows. This
\ndichotomy is what has kept Wilson until very recently reclaiming
