One thing I cannot stand is hearing about is “what coulda been.”
\nWhat is that, you ask? Well, the other day I found out that there
\nhad been a possibility I could have ended up with my grandparents’
\nBuick Regal, but it didn’t happen. Another time I found out my
\nparents had tried to send me out to California to see an Elton John
\ntribute concert, but they couldn’t find a flight.<\/p>\n
In both cases, I would have been much happier had I not been
\ntold these things could have happened, therefore spared wondering
\n“what coulda been.”<\/p>\n
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> is essentially a collection of outtakes and
\nsnippets from Brian Wilson’s unreleased masterpiece
\nSMiLE<\/i>. For years,
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> was as close as Beach Boys fans could get to
\nSMiLE<\/i>; that is, until Wilson released his own version of the
\nalbum last year. Unfortunately, the release of
\nSMiLE<\/i> shines a glaring light on the faults and hypocrisies
\nof
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> itself. In other words, the ultimate “what
\ncoulda been” came true.<\/p>\n
The saving grace of
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> comes with the inclusion of “Good Vibrations”
\nand “Heroes And Villains.” Quite possibly the best two tracks of
\nBrian Wilson’s career, their complexity and strong sense of melody
\nsomehow meld to forge the definition of avant-garde pop music, of
\nwhich
\nSMiLE<\/i> was to be, and what
\nPet Sounds<\/i> was (“Heroes And Villains was one of the major
\nworks from the
\nSMiLE<\/i> sessions).<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the rest of
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> happens to consist of half-baked, half-assed
\nefforts from The Beach Boys sans Brian Wilson. What were stirring,
\nintricate songs are turned into bare bones, vacuous noises. For
\ngod’s sake, the first half of “Wind Chimes” is more spoken word
\nthan pop music. “Wonderful,” is completely ruined by a Carl
\nWilson’s breathy, wimpy vocals. And If I wanted two and a half
\nminutes of nonsensical, twenty-seconds bits of organ and ukulele,
\npunctuated by laughing Beach Boys well I’d\u2026actually, I’ve
\nnever heard anything quite like it, so there is no reference
\npoint.<\/p>\n
If one were to read my past Beach Boy reviews, it’d be apparent
\nI have nothing but the utmost respect for their group harmonies. I
\ncontend they are the best of any band ever to grace pop music.
\nWell,
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> has actually done damage to that respect. Sure
\nit isn’t all hit and miss; “With Me Tonight” is a decent a cappella
\neffort that manages to recapture some past glory. But any average
\ngroup could have turned out “Little Pad,” “She’s Goin Bald,” “Wind
\nChimes,” “Wonderful” and “Whistle In.”<\/p>\n
In the end, what really ruins Smiley Smile for me is this. The
\nBeach Boys put out this dreck because they thought
\nSMiLE<\/i> was too weird, too experimental. They turned down an
\nabsolute masterpiece and released this. You know, if
\nSMiLE<\/i> had never come out, maybe my opinion of this record
\nwould have been different. Fans in the ’60s must have heard this
\nrecord and speculated how good
\nSMiLE<\/i> would have been. However, with the release of the
\nultimate “what coulda been,”
\nSmiley Smile<\/i> invokes no such feelings anymore. It is just a
