\npunk. The songs seldom last more than three minutes, the lyrics are
\n“anti-establishment” and the numbers are fast-paced, with the
\nbeats-per-second fast enough to be called punk.<\/p>\n
However, the band’s music is too polished, and this defiance is
\ncriminal to the very essence of punk.
\nTroublegum<\/i> is a Therapy?-styled punk-insolent record — and
\nit is the best punk record of the ’90s.<\/p>\n
\nTroublegum<\/i> is definitely not a groundbreaking record. It
\nwill probably have minimal impact on the future of rock music. But,
\nit is inventive. Even though punk music is all about the angst and
\nvery little about musical innovation, Therapy?’s style of refining
\nthe rawness of punk music and still maintaining the punk edge makes<\/p>\n
Troublegum<\/i> special.<\/p>\n
Therapy? has not gone out of its way to be daringly innovative.
\nIt has just made the best use of its heavy metal influences, fusing
\nthe poppy elements of heavy metal music into the tight abruptness
\nof punk. Metal music — more specifically music by the ’80s hair
\nbands — has always had an attractive side, with inspiring solos
\nand easy-to-remember choruses.
\nTroublegum<\/i> has exactly these two elements packed in each of
\nits three-minute-long punk numbers; the rest is just awe-inspiring
\nmusicianship.
\nTroublegum<\/i> is one of the few albums where a three-piece act
\nsounds like a full-fledged five-piece force, and the fine
\nproduction work makes this happen.<\/p>\n
Therapy?’s adept mixing of hair metal and punkish arrogance and
\nquickness, along with the neat production, has the record sounding
\nalmost like a dance album without synthesizers.
\nTroublegum<\/i> is filled with the goodness of foot-tapping
\nenergy, and though punk inherently is not designed to be
\nsophisticated or systematically danceable,
\nTroublegum<\/i> is.<\/p>\n
If non-conformance is what punk is all about, then
\nTroublegum<\/i> is true to the core — it is non-conforming to
