For all the critical raves bestowed upon
\nFugazi<\/a>, it’s easy to forget Ian MacKaye
\nfounded another D.C. band: Minor Threat.<\/p>\n

Minor Threat’s self-titled album was ferocious, politically
\ncharged and serious as a spinal epidural. While most punk bands
\nindulged in the traditional rock excesses of substances, MacKaye
\nwas steadfast anti-drug and anti-drinking.<\/p>\n

If you’re going to pick any Minor Threat album, it may as well
\nbe
\nComplete Discography<\/i>, which is virtually everything the band
\nrecorded fit onto one CD. The album contains their eponymous
\nrelease and their
\nOut of Step<\/i> EP. Like any good punk album, it’s hard to
\ncriticize any song because most of the songs barely hit two
\nminutes.<\/p>\n

Even with MacKaye’s seriousness, Minor Threat tore through their
\nsongs with a drunken playfulness, which came from bassist Steve
\nHansgen and Brian Baker (Baker also played guitar), guitarist Lyle
\nPreslar and drummer Jeff Nelson. Their sloppy, kinetic chops
\nprobably caused many-a-concertgoers to mistake “Bottled Violence”
\nas an endorsement for kicking the shit out of someone in the mosh
\npit.<\/p>\n

You’ll need a lyric sheet to decipher most of the songs in
\nComplete Discography<\/i>. You’ll most likely want a lyric sheet
\nto make sure you don’t mistake a song like “Guilty Of Being White”
\nfor being a racist song. Yes, the band’s image included shaved
\nheads and leather boots and the song begins with something straight
\nout of a Michael Savage rant (“I’m sorry \/ For something I didn’t
\ndo \/ Lynched somebody \/ But I don’t know who \/ You blame for
\nslavery \/ A hundred years before I was born”), but the song ends
\nwith the narrator serving time of a racist crime. With music like
\nthis, it’s hard to gauge for subtleties and double-meanings when
\nthe music is intense enough to piss off most any neighbor.<\/p>\n

Fugazi gave MacKaye a more diverse easel to work with, but Minor
\nThreat helped lay the foundation for the influential D.C. punk
\nmusic scene in the ’80s.
\nComplete Discography<\/i> is not an album most listeners are
\ngoing to put on ‘repeat,’ but any self-respecting punk purist
