Somewhere, on the line that separates alternative rock from
\nshock rock, there is a middle ground of intense, angry alternative
\nthat shocks your eardrums into submission. There aren’t many bands
\nwho would fit a category like this, but when you hear one of them,
\nthere’s no questioning they belong in that zone.<\/p>\n
Chalk up the Deftones as one of these bands – after listening to
\ntheir sophomore release
\nAround The Fur<\/i>, I found myself wondering if this was the
\nsame band a crowd tried to boo off a Chicago stage when they opened
\nfor Kiss in 1996. Lead singer\/ranter Chino Moreno and crew are back
\nwith a more mature, even more angry set of songs that will win over
\neven the toughest of critics.<\/p>\n
Led by the success of the track “My Own Summer (Shove It),”
\nMoreno and crew bash through ten tracks (as well as the hidden
\neleventh –
\n
\nwhy<\/i>
\n<\/b> do bands insist on filling half an hour with dead air just for
\na bonus track… stop it,
\nstop it,<\/i>
\n
\nSTOP IT!!!<\/i>
\n<\/b> ), conveying all the angst and emotion as their debut release
\nAdrenaline<\/i> with a more thoughtful approach to the music.
\nAnyone can create crunching chords, but it takes skill to weave
\nthem into a song you can tap your foot or slam your head to.<\/p>\n
Guitarist Stephen Carpenter provides those crunchy riffs, and
\nmakes each one that blares on the eardrums that much more
\nenjoyable. Bassist Chi Cheng and drummer Abe Cunningham are equally
\nas important to this band as Moreno and Carpenter; each one adds
\njust the right amount of spice to make the music work as well as it
\ndoes.<\/p>\n
And it’s not all just distorted lyrics and shouting on
\nAround The Fur<\/i>. “Mascara” is a more gentle performance
\nfeaturing Moreno’s singing, as is “MX” (which also features Max
\nCavalera, formerly of Sepultura, on guitar and vocals). These two
\nsongs alone should put to rest any preconceived notions about the
\nband, despite what you might see from them on MTV.<\/p>\n
Whether it’s the ferocity of the title track, the sheer power
\nthat comes across on “Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)” or adding a
\nbit of harmonics into the panic on “Dai The Flu,” The Deftones are
\nout to prove that they’re a force to be reckoned with on
\nAround The Fur<\/i>… you won’t hear me argue otherwise
\nanymore.<\/p>\n
It might take some time to warm up to an album like this, but
\nespecially if you got sucked into the video for “My Own Summer
\n(Shove It),” you’ll realize it doesn’t take long for it to grab
\nhold of you. If you still have any hesitations, you might wish to
\nthink of the Deftones as a more intense Faith No More, without the
\nkeyboards, like from their
\nAngel Dust<\/i> days.<\/p>\n
\nAround The Fur<\/i> is the album that should secure The Deftones’
\nplace in the musical spectrum, as well as win them a whole new
\nlegion of fans. Something tells me that when they come through
\nChicago again, the only sounds they’ll hear is cheering from the
