The world of heavy metal music – once again coming to the
\nlimelight, albeit slowly – is filled with so many bands that one
\nwould be hard-pressed to say they recognize a good number of the
\ngroups. Even in my metalhead days in the ’80s, I couldn’t claim I
\nknew a lot about many of the groups. Nowadays, it’s even harder for
\nme to keep track.<\/p>\n
Hypocrisy is one of these bands that falls into the “possibly
\nnot so well known” category, but those in the know realize they’ve
\nstumbled onto something good. Once just a death metal group, Peter
\nT\u00e4gtgren and crew refined their sound and band vision over
\nfive years to become a well-respected group in their field. Almost
\ncalling it a day after their most recent studio effort
\nThe Final Chapter<\/i> (they have a new album coming in the next
\nfew months), Hypocrisy gives their fans a special gift with
\nHypocrisy Destroys Wacken<\/i>, a live album that is an
\nincredibly powerful introduction to this group.<\/p>\n
Recorded at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany in 1998,
\nlead vocalist\/guitarist T\u00e4gtgren, guitarist Mattias Kamijo,
\nbassist Mikael Hadlund and drummer Lars Sz\u00f6ke plow through 11
\ntracks covering their entire career. If you’ve never heard
\nHypocrisy before this album as I hadn’t, be prepared for one hell
\nof a handshake. The tone of this band’s music is incredible, with
\nguitar lines that ring out (thanks possibly to T\u00e4gtgren’s
\ncustom axe – is that an 11-string guitar?) and bore themselves into
\nyour skull.<\/p>\n
Though not every song is played at breakneck speed, Hypocrisy
\nknow when it’s time to turn up the juice and when it’s best to let
\nthe power of the music itself do the talking. The album’s opening
\ncut, “Roswell 47,” is a shining example of this musical control
\nthat Hypocrisy have. Likewise, “A Coming Race” contains possibly
\nsome of the strongest material from this live show.<\/p>\n
Throughout it all, T\u00e4gtgren and crew never let the energy
\nlevel dip. True, you might not understand every single word that
\nT\u00e4gtgren growls into the microphone, but you don’t need to
\ndecipher what he’s saying to understand the brute force of the
\nmusic presented in this concert. From “Buried” and “Left To Rot” to
\n“Pleasure Of Molestation” and “The Final Chapter,” Hypocrisy make
\nevery note count, as if they were playing their last show, and they
\nwant to go out on a positive note.<\/p>\n
\nHypocrisy Destroys Wacken<\/i> is bolstered by four additional
\nstudio tracks, though I’ve been unable to discover if these were
\nspecially recorded for this album or if they were leftovers from
\nprevious sessions. Either way, it really doesn’t matter, ’cause
\nthese tracks are just as good. Cuts like “TIme Warp”, “Fuck U” and
\n“Beginning Of The End” make the listener drool for the upcoming new
\nstudio album – and should make everyone want to thank Hypocrisy for
\ndeciding not to end the band after
\nThe Final Chapter<\/i>.<\/p>\n
\nHypocrisy Destroys Wacken<\/i> is a metal feast for the ears,
\nthough it admittedly isn’t for everyone. Still, if you like getting
\na good buzz from hearing metal played the way it was meant to be
