Get the gin out of the freezer. Grab a deck of cards and a
\ncigar. And make sure the tonic isn’t flat. The Reverend Horton Heat
\nhave a new album.<\/p>\n
Their latest,
\nSpace Heater<\/i> is much like their previous albums. Flashy
\nwomen, songs about couch-hoarding bums and prasises to public
\ndrunkedness are all over
\nSpace Heater<\/i>. It’s probably the most rock-oriented album
\nthey’ve released, but much of their traditional psychobilly sound
\nis there.<\/p>\n
Those psychobilly elements have been toned down slightly,
\nhowever. Jim “Reverend” Horton Heath’s guitar playing stretches
\nmore notes and allows more dynamics to show. But in “Jimbo Song”,
\ntheir old selves are still there. That song will guarantee a mosh
\npit frenzy in most venues.<\/p>\n
The energy in
\nSpace Heater<\/i> seems more contrived than their previous
\nreleases. That may be because their old albums were produced by
\nmavericks. Ministry’s Al Jourgenson and the Butthole Surfers Gibby
\nHaynes have sat behind the control booths and unleased the energy
\nthe Reverend show in their borderline religous live shows.
\nSpace Heater<\/i> could have used them or even Mojo Nixon as a
\nproducer. Unfortunately, they got Ed Stasium to produce it.<\/p>\n
Any rumours that Stasium is guilty of over-producing are
\nconfirmed on
\nSpace Heater<\/i>. “Baby I’m Drunk” and “Couch Surfin'” have
\nenough humor in them to stand Stasium’s polish. “Native Tongue of
\nLove” and “Mi Amor” aren’t as lucky.<\/p>\n
Given, most of the flaws on
\nSpace Heater<\/i> are non-existant when they are on stage. There,
\nthe cheap beer and KFC white trash luster of the Reverend proudly
\nshine.<\/p>\n
Sadly though, there’s not enough of those moments on
\nSpace Heater<\/i>. It lacks the cohesive feel of
\nIt’s Martini Time<\/i> and
\nThe Full-Custom Gospel Sounds of The Reverend Horton Heat<\/i>.
\nBassist Jim Wallace just seems more unleased on those two
\nefforts.<\/p>\n
Is the Reverend mood music? You betcha. Perfect for playing
\ncards or Nintendo 64 wrestling with three other friends to. And
\nSpace Heater<\/i> does the job when it comes to attaining the
\nReverend sound. But, will you miss it if another Reverend album is
\nin your player? Probably not.<\/p>\n
