It’s been scientifically proven that children learn best through
\nrepetition. On the positive side, that’s why shows like
\nSesame Street<\/i> keep hammering in only certain letters and
\nnumbers each show, and why
\nBlue’s Clues<\/i> only broadcast one show each week. (I don’t
\nknow if they still do that; I prefer to watch
\nBear In The Big Blue House<\/i>.) On the negative side, the
\ntoymakers know if they hawk their tawdry wares enough during the
\ncartoons, the kids will learn that the toy equals happiness, and
\nwill pester Mom and Dad for it.<\/p>\n
For kids, repetition can be a good thing. But when I was
\nlistening to
\nDisney’s Jungle Boogie<\/i> recently, I found myself saying out
\nloud, “I’ve heard most of this before.” A compilation of songs all
\nrelated to movies or shows with a jungle theme, this disc combines
\nwhat we’ve heard on a couple other soundtracks and samplers into
\none package. It’s fun to listen to, but if you’ve bought anything
\nlike
\nRadio Disney: Kid Jams<\/i> or
\nDisney’s Princess Collection Volume 2<\/i> recently, both you and
\nyour kids are going to experience deja vu.<\/p>\n
Now, it’s not that I’m against hearing some of these songs more
\nthan once. Tracks like “The Bare Necessities” and “I Wan’na Be Like
\nYou” (both on
\nThe Jungle Book<\/i> soundtrack) are always welcome additions;
\nindeed, I’ve found that my daughter and I are watching
\nThe Jungle Book<\/i> more often these days because of this.
\nLikewise, tracks like “Circle Of Life” (the original version from
\nThe Lion King<\/i>) have a charm about them that cannot be easily
\nerased.<\/p>\n
And there are some additions to
\nDisney’s Jungle Boogie<\/i> that make it worth the experience.
\n“Jungle Book Groove” is a dance mix of some of the previously
\nmentioned tracks that is a lot of fun to listen to; next up, I need
\nto put this one on and see what my daughter does to the music.
\nLikewise, doctored versions of “Stand By Me” and “Yummy Yummy
\nYummy” (both from
\nTimon And Pumbaa<\/i>), albeit corny, are still kind of fun to
\nlisten to. Frankly, I’d rather listen to this version of “Yummy
\nYummy Yummy” than the original by Ohio Express.<\/p>\n
There are a couple of tracks on
\nDisney’s Jungle Boogie<\/i> that make me wonder why they were
\nincluded. Songs like “Warthog Rhapsody” and “Alone Together” don’t
\nreally seem to fit the mood of the disc – then again, neither does
\n“Circle Of Life” – as “swinging, jiving, toe-tapping” numbers. And
\nwhile “Colonel Hathi’s March” does have a beat to it, I’m sorry,
\nthis just is not one of my favorite Disney tracks ever made.<\/p>\n
My biggest concern, though, was that these tracks are starting
\nto get a little overused. I mean, if it was a matter that they had
\nbeen on just the albums they were pulled from, no problem. But it’s
\nalmost getting to the point where you can’t pick up a Disney album
\nwithout a few of these tracks – like the version of “Can You Feel
\nThe Love Tonight” from
\nThe Lion King<\/i> (read: without Elton John singing) that I’m
\nreally getting sick of. If you’re going to continue to release
\ncompilation albums, fine – just start using a bigger variety of
\nsongs.<\/p>\n
Of course, this is an adult talking, and we all know by now that
\nadults are not the target audience for this music. That role is
\nfilled by the kids, and if they’ve ever gotten a rise out of any of
\nthese songs, then this collection is sure to go over like
\ngangbusters. And in the end, isn’t that what’s really
