If you’re reading this review on the date it actually ran, you
\nmight hear the sounds of a birthday party going on in the
\nbackground. My daughter turned three years old yesterday, and we’re
\nholding her party the day after so all the relatives could come and
\ncelebrate with our little princess. (It also gives Daddy – who is
\nseriously out of shape – time to recover from our trip to Discovery
\nZone on Friday. I swear, they design those things so the parents
\nget more of a workout than the kids.)<\/p>\n
What better time, then, to head to the “in” basket of the Pierce
\nMemorial Archives and fish out
\nDisney’s Princess Collection, Vol. 2<\/i>? Basically a
\ncompilation of love songs and tracks centered around some of the
\nfemale lead characters in numerous Disney movies, this collection
\ntries to fill in gaps left by the collection’s previous volume
\nwhile working in some of the newer songs from their ever-growing
\nlibrary.<\/p>\n
Some of the selections are wise choices, such as the inclusion
\nof “Reflection” from
\nMulan<\/i> (I still have a hard time believing this track is less
\nthan two minutes long), “I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)” from
\nHercules<\/i> and “Kiss The Girl” from
\nThe Little Mermaid<\/i> (another song that surprised me at its
\nbrevity).<\/p>\n
Others I found a little more questionable. When I think of
\ntimeless Disney songs, the name of Gilbert Gottfried doesn’t
\nexactly come to mind. Yet here he is, as the voice of Iago, on the
\nsong “Forget About Love” (from
\nThe Return Of Jafar<\/i>). While it makes some sense once Liz
\nCallaway (the singing voice of Jasmine) comes into the picture,
\nit’s still not a track I would have immediately thought of for this
\ncollection.<\/p>\n
Likewise, the version of “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from
\nThe Lion King<\/i> is… well, I would have much preferred to
\nhave heard Elton John’s version, but I admit to having some bias in
\nthis case. Finally, including one song not featured in a movie or
\nBroadway play – “There’s Only One Ariel” from
\nSongs From The Sea<\/i>) – seems a tad suspect to me. The track
\nitself isn’t anything to write home about.<\/p>\n
I guess what surprised me about
\nDisney’s Princess Collection Vol. 2<\/i> was what they
\ndidn’t<\/i> include. “Baby Mine” from
\nDumbo<\/i> would have been a nice track (though at its stage in
\nthe movie, it hardly qualifies as “music of hopes, dreams and happy
\nendings” as the cover art defines these songs). Possibly including
\n“My Own Home” (from
\nThe Jungle Book<\/i>) or “Bella Notte” (from
\nLady And The Tramp<\/i>) could have been nice touches. (I’ll let
\nyou fill in your own wish list.)<\/p>\n
\nDisney’s Princess Collection Vol. 2<\/i> is still an album that
\nyour own little princesses will undoubtedly enjoy, especially if
\nthey’re familiar with the movies that most of these songs come
\nfrom. But I still can’t help but wonder what this album could have
