Chances are, if you have kids, you’ve purchased at least one
\nvolume in the
\nClassic Disney<\/i> series. Compiling both the best-of and
\nlittle-heard music from 60 years of “musical magic”, the discs
\nliterally have something for everyone.<\/p>\n
Now, I’m at a bit of a disadvantage. Having only the latest
\nvolume,
\nClassic Disney Volume 5<\/i>, in my collection – and not having
\nthe courage to ask my friends at Disney for the other volumes (hey,
\nI’ve got to buy
\nsome<\/i> of the music I review) – I’m behind the times regarding
\nwhat to include or exclude. All told, the previous four volumes
\ncompile 100 songs from Disney’s history, and breezing through some
\nof the titles on CDNow, it looks like they’ve done their
\nhomework.<\/p>\n
\nVolume 5<\/i> is a disc that draws about 40 percent of its
\ncontent from recent releases from the Disney film vaults. Movies
\nlike
\nMulan<\/i> (“I’ll Make A Man Out Of You”),
\nHercules<\/i> (“I Won’t Say I’m In Love”) and
\nThe Hunchback Of Notre Dame<\/i> (“God Help The Outcasts”) all
\nget their fair turn in the spotlight – though I’ll be honest, I’m
\nsurprised that “Reflection” from
\nMulan<\/i> wasn’t included. (Maybe in
\nVolume 6<\/i>, perhaps?)<\/p>\n
There are guaranteed to be some songs in here that will be new
\nto some people. Unless you had the Burl Ives re-issue from about a
\nyear ago, chances are you’ve not heard his take on “Lavender Blue
\n(Dilly Dilly)” (from 1949’s
\nSo Dear To My Heart<\/i>), and “Humphrey Hop” (from 1956’s
\nIn The Bag<\/i>) was a new one to me. Discs like this one are
\nliterally treasure chests, both for our kids and the inner child in
\nall of us.<\/p>\n
This isn’t to say that I liked every song on the disc. The
\nselection from 1977’s
\nPete’s Dragon<\/i>, “Boo Bop Bopbop Bop (I Love You Too)”, was
\none I could have easily gone the rest of my life without hearing
\nagain. (It struck me as cornball when I was six, and not much has
\nchanged.) And while I absolutely love Winnie-The-Pooh (possibly
\nbecause I’ve now seen the movie some 20 times, thanks to my
\ndaughter), there’s something not right about this version of “The
\nRain Rain Rain Came Down Down Down” – it sounds too new, not like
\nthe version in the film.<\/p>\n
Still, these all are small points to make about a volume that is
\notherwise well thought out and documented. Even if
\nClassic Disney Volume 5<\/i> is the first of the discs you pick
\nup, it’s not a bad place to start – at least the kids will have a
\nmodern reference point with the newer movies. But to be fair, this
\none belongs nestled next to the other four volumes in the
