It has often been said that some of the guitar sounds that the
\nlate Jimi Hendrix wrenched out of his Stratocaster will never be
\nable to be reproduced. If this is truly the case, the late Stevie
\nRay Vaughan showed he could come
\nreal<\/i> close to doing so.<\/p>\n
On his second effort with his backing band Double Trouble,
\nCouldn’t Stand The Weather<\/i>, Vaughan demonstrates prowess in
\nblues, rock and jazz, all without losing sight of the big picture
\nin front of him. And had this album had a little more soul at times
\n(and had been a tad longer), it would have been perfect.<\/p>\n
Vaughan pays tribute to Hendrix with his cover of “Voodoo Chile
\n(Slight Return)”, a cover which damn near matches the original to
\nthe “T”. Vaughan’s vocals, for this particular song, aren’t a
\nperfect match, but his playing mixes equal parts of his own style
\nand Hendrix’s to create a version which even the diehard Hendrix
\nfans should approve of.<\/p>\n
But Vaughan is no mere copycat; he proves early and often he is
\na talented guitarist who can hold his own ground. The opening
\ninstrumental “Scuttle Buttin'” throws Vaughan and Double Trouble
\ninto the boogie groove set at “high,” and refuses to let up for a
\nminute. Of the two better-known tracks on this one, the title track
\nis the one to make sure you don’t miss. Vaughan quite possibly was
\none of the last masters of the Stratocaster; he puts this thing
\nthrough the musical version of boot camp, never failing to make
\neach note sound sweet and cherished.<\/p>\n
As for “Cold Shot,” I’ve never really been a fan of this track,
\neven though it’s executed well. I don’t know, I guess I wasn’t a
\nbig fan of Vaughan doing plodding blues. But, hey – to each his or
\nher own. If you like it, more power to you.<\/p>\n
The biggest gripe I have with
\nCouldn’t Stand The Weather<\/i> is it seems, at times,
\nemotionless. “The Things (That) I Used To Do” should be a weeping
\nblues number, but Vaughan, for reasons unknown, fails to capture
\nthe emotion the track requires. Two other songs, “Tin Pan Alley”
\nand “Honey Bee,” are nice enough, but they don’t have the kind of
\nenergy that some of the other tracks have – and in these cases, it
\nseems like they needed it.<\/p>\n
Vaughan tips his hat to jazz at the end with “Stang’s Swang,” a
\nnumber which almost made me wish that Vaughan had done more
\nexperimenting with this style of music prior to his tragic death in
\n1990. It’s further proof that Vaughan could control his instrument
\nand make it produce whatever sound he wanted out of it – especially
\nfrom a guitar that some consider one of the more difficult to play
\nand master.<\/p>\n
With only eight songs on this one, I kind of wish that Vaughan
\nhad thrown some more material on
\nCouldn’t Stand The Weather<\/i>; it seems rather anti-climactic
\nwhen the last notes fade out. And, like many fans of Vaughan’s, I’m
\nconstantly waiting for new material to come out – even though the
\nvoice has been long silent.<\/p>\n
Even without the full passion I would have liked to have heard
\nfrom this one,
\nCouldn’t Stand The Weather<\/i> is a fine addition to anyone’s
\ncollection. My forecast for the album: Partly sunny, with
\noccasionall clouds, but a nice day overall.<\/p>\n
