Imagine this: You’re Donny Osmond. You’re recording a CD
\nfeaturing your renditions of songs from popular Broadway shows,
\nThis Is The Moment<\/i>. Wouldn’t you choose to include something
\nfrom your days in
\nJoseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/i>?<\/p>\n
Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that Osmond doesn’t reprise any
\nof the songs he sang for over 18 months nonstop. After all, this
\ndisc gives him a chance to stretch his creative legs and put his
\nown spin on 13 selections from such musicals as
\nRent<\/i>,
\nJekyll & Hyde<\/i> and
\nSweeney Todd<\/i>. Even if you’re not a fan of Osmond’s, you have
\nto admit he’s got the perfect voice for these selections. But for
\nall the praise I can offer
\nThis Is The Moment<\/i> (and there is much), I do find myself
\nwishing that most of these songs hadn’t had a pop spin put on
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Oh, it’s not that Osmond isn’t up to the challenge; he lovingly
\ntakes on these songs as if he had been cast in the roles which
\nsurrounded these numbers. Hearing him take on “This Is The Moment”
\n(from
\nJekyll & Hyde<\/i>), “Immortality” (from
\nSaturday Night Fever<\/i>) and “Our Kind Of Love” (from
\nThe Beautiful Game<\/i>) convinces me that Osmond could easily
\nstep into any role and turn it into something special. Even when he
\ntakes a classic like “Luck Be A Lady” (from
\nGuys & Dolls<\/i>), he’s able to transcend all other versions
\nand make this particular song sound like this was the first time it
\nwas ever being committed to tape.<\/p>\n
And it’s not that the pop stylings (as well as the production of
\nPhil Ramone) aren’t suitable at times. The two selections from
\nSeussical<\/i>, “It’s Possible” and “Solla Sollew,” both work
\nwell with this approach. (I still have the soundtrack to Seussical
\nto review – no, Beth, I haven’t forgotten – and it will be
\ninteresting to compare the two versions.) Likewise, both Osmond and
\nRamone know when to respect a song’s roots and leave the pop feel
\nat the door, a prime example being “At The Edge Of The World” (from<\/p>\n
Riverdance On Broadway<\/i>).<\/p>\n
There are but two mistakes made on
\nThis Is The Moment<\/i>. The first is the selection of “Give My
\nRegards To Broadway” (from
\nLittle Johnny Jones<\/i>) for inclusion on this disc. It’s a nice
\ntry, but even Osmond can’t bring this tired old song back to life.
\nIt might have been better for everyone involved to have selected
\nsomething else than to try and milk this one for all it was worth.
\nThe second comes on “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” (from the movie
\nToy Story<\/i>). I’m sorry, but if I never hear Rosie O’Donnell
\nsing again, it will be too soon.<\/p>\n
As Osmond moves into middle age, he continues to prove that the
\nolder he gets, the richer his voice becomes, making his work that
\nmuch more impressive.
\nThis Is The Moment<\/i>, even with the two ill-advised selections
\n(which I don’t blame on Osmond), is ample proof that Osmond is well
\ndeserving of the accolades he receives, and will be a nice addition
\nto the collections of fans of Broadway music, as well as
