For every hundred or so soulful musicians,<br \/>\nbemoaning lost love to the same tunes we&#8217;ve heard a thousand times<br \/>\nbefore, there are only a handful of artists that manage to stand<br \/>\nout. With that said, Damien Rice is truly one of those. Managing to<br \/>\ncreate one of the year&#8217;s most outstanding sleeper hits, Irish<br \/>\nimport Rice has crafted an intense album with just guitars, cello<br \/>\nand his signature melancholy vocals.<\/p>\n<p>Haunting and melodic, Rice has taken the best of Jeff<br \/>\nBuckley, Dave Matthews Band and Don McLean and emerged with his own<br \/>\ndistinctive blend that defies the folk label placed upon him.<br \/>\n<i>O<\/i> is one of those few albums that leave its mark on you from<br \/>\nfirst listen. Rice has injected all the passion and honesty that&#8217;s<br \/>\nbeen absent from numerous releases lately into his modest debut. He<br \/>\nmanages to find beauty in any and every emotion and wastes no time<br \/>\nsubmitting to tired, typical clich\u00c3\u00a9s.<\/p>\n<p>The album manages to grab you in from the start with<br \/>\nthe pleading desperation of &#8220;Volcano&#8221; and the understated yearning<br \/>\nof the albums&#8217; standout track, &#8220;The Blower&#8217;s Daughter&#8221; (some<br \/>\nuseless trivia &#8212; it was featured prominently in the movie<br \/>\n<i>Closer<\/i>, and hearing it in the commercial is what prompted me<br \/>\nto go on an insane search for the artist behind the mysterious<br \/>\nsong!)<\/p>\n<p>With the stunning simplicity of lyrics like, &#8220;Stones<br \/>\ntaught me to fly \/ love taught me to lie \/ life taught me to die&#8221;<br \/>\nfrom the album&#8217;s instant favorite, &#8220;Cannonball,&#8221; Rice has created a<br \/>\nmasterful album that grips you from the beginning and flows along<br \/>\nwith an incredible sense of ease.<\/p>\n<p>My only qualm with the album is the myriad of extra<br \/>\nsongs shoved into the sixteen minute long &#8220;Eskimo,&#8221; which could<br \/>\nhave easily been sliced into separate tracks &#8211; especially when one<br \/>\nis just a continuation of the previous track.
