Babyface, Bjork, Me’shell Ndegeocello, and Nelle
\nHooper: Madonna’s sixth studio album is packed with bigwigs, and
\nBedtime Stories<\/i> is a product of a hodgepodge of different
\ncelebrity collaborations.<\/p>\n

Madonna’s previous album Erotica<\/i> (possibly her
\nmost intense work to date) found her taking on a darker,
\nunconventional style as a pop singer; it was a very ambitious
\nproject. But with the follow-up Bedtime Stories<\/i>, she trades
\nthe all-consuming energy of Erotica<\/i> for stylistic
\nheterogeneity. The inclusion of collaborators with diverse musical
\nbackgrounds is surely an experimental move, just as ambitious as
\nher move with Erotica<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Though flavored with contrasting styles of pop music,
\nBedtime Stories<\/i>, if summed up, is Madonna’s R&B album.
\nThanks to its main producer Dallas Austin — who has produced
\nalbums for R&B acts like Janet Jackson, TLC, and Boyz II Men —
\nit has a definite R&B influence, though made subtle by
\nMadonna’s natural disco instincts.<\/p>\n

The great thing about Bedtime Stories<\/i> is that the
\nstar-studded guest appearances have made distinctive contributions
\non the album. Each of these artists have graced the tracks they are
\nfeatured on with the personalities of their unique music styles.
\nLike the markedly funky bass hooks on “I’d Rather Be Your Lover,”
\nwhich features Me’shell Ndegeocello on bass and vocals; the silky
\nsmooth love melodrama on “Forbidden Love” and “Take A Bow,” which
\nfeatures Babyface in the songwriting and producing roles; and the
\nspacey 90s psychedelic electro-pop glaze on the title song, which
\nfeatures Bjork as a co-writer and her chum Nelle Hooper as the
\nproducer.<\/p>\n

Even though Bedtime Stories<\/i> is an album of
\nvariegated dispositions, it lacks the depth and fire of
\nErotica<\/i>, and is sometimes a bit too casual; it is a
\ncomparatively weaker effort. Still, it is a great pop album in
\nitself. It shows the versatility of this “material girl” as a
\nmature pop-artist who can dare to try out new musical experiments
\nand come up with excellent results.<\/p>\n
