{"id":39812,"date":"2006-06-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-06-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/tangerine-2\/"},"modified":"2006-06-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2006-06-23T00:00:00","slug":"tangerine-2","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/tangerine-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Tangerine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><review><\/p>\n<p>One of the strangest tracks The Beatles ever recorded<br \/>\nwas &#8220;Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.&#8221; Imagine the weird vibe of<br \/>\nthat song running through an entire album, and you&#8217;ve got an idea<br \/>\nof what <i>Tangerine<\/i> is like.<\/p>\n<p><i>Tangerine<\/i> runs the gamut in terms of style,<br \/>\nthough the closest comparison is probably Paul Simon, since the<br \/>\ndisc is eccentric just like some of Simon&#8217;s work. Mead is a pretty<br \/>\nclose match for Simon&#8217;s vocals as well; this is pop music, but with<br \/>\na edge.<\/p>\n<p>The opening and title track sets the stage in<br \/>\ngorgeous fashion. Nothing like an appearance by the glockenspiel,<br \/>\neasily one of my favorite words to say, to draw the listener in,<br \/>\nand violins, clavinet and a cello all make an appearance. The song<br \/>\nis tantalizingly short, making the listener want to hear more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hard To Remember&#8221; is what prompted the Beatles<br \/>\nreference. The track captures a &#8220;circus&#8221; vibe without sounding<br \/>\nhokey, and the percussion makes the song with its varied bangs and<br \/>\nwhistles. Things pick up with a minute left, when the track veers<br \/>\nway off course and goes funk on the listener. It was at this point<br \/>\nwhen I realized this was going to be an enjoyable record.<\/p>\n<p>The fun moments on <i>Tangerine<\/i> come fast and<br \/>\nfurious. &#8220;Fighting For Your Life&#8221; begins with a few quirky<br \/>\nguitar\/ukulele arrangements before descending into sunny, 60s style<br \/>\npop. The chorus, bolstered by Mead&#8217;s falsetto vocals, is absolutely<br \/>\ninfectious; I&#8217;ve been humming it for a while now. &#8220;Hallelujah, I<br \/>\nWas Wrong&#8221; features a little jazz flute and could have been an AM<br \/>\nhit in 1974.<\/p>\n<p>While some tracks aren&#8217;t as high quality as the ones<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve mentioned, what keeps this album interesting is its sound.<br \/>\nThose weaker tracks occupy the listener solely for their<br \/>\nuniqueness. For example, the pseudo-barbershop &#8220;Reminded #1&#8221; sounds<br \/>\nso different than anything else on <i>Tangerine<\/i> that it comes<br \/>\noff as fresh and inventive.<\/p>\n<p><i>Tangerine<\/i> was a surprise; I did not come in<br \/>\nexpecting it to be this good.
