Def Leppard made a powerful statement with this arena
\nrock classic release. It also marked the end of the band’s sound as
\na guitar-driven band in the vein of AC\/DC. History tells us that
\ndrummer Rick Allen would lose his arm during the recording sessions
\nfor the follow-up Hysteria<\/i> and that the band would go on to
\nreinvent itself into a group that uses technology to drive their
\nmessage home. In 1983, Pyromania<\/i> was the biggest album of
\nthe band’s career todate. It is Pyromania<\/i> that has
\n“Photograph” and “Rock of Ages,” which are the songs that cover
\nbands learn when they decide to cover a Def Leppard tune. It’s the
\nstraight-ahead guitar rock of Pyromania<\/i> that made the band
\nimmensely popular.<\/p>\n

Starting with the perfect “Rock! Rock! (Till You
\nDrop)” anthem, the first track showcases vocalist Joe Elliott’s
\nrange and attitude. Rick Allen supplies a solid backbeat, providing
\nmechanical and precise defiance with each snare hit. Within this
\nsong, you get a wide range of style. The hit single\/video
\n“Photograph” recalls the MTV glory days when they actually showed
\nvideos. This song starts with the classic opening chord that cues
\nvolume knobs to be cranked when heard.<\/p>\n

The non-singles on this release are the real
\nclassics, though. My favorite Def Leppard song of all time is
\n“Stagefright.” I like the stereotypical “Welcome to the show!”
\nvocal intro and the up-tempo drums and vocal delivery. The guitar
\nsolo captures the essence of arena rock.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the tag team of “Too Late For
\nLove” and “Die Hard The Hunter” really drag this release down.
\n“Late” is a power ballad that doesn’t work while “Hunter” suffers
\nfrom a weak arrangement. It would have been easy to dismiss the
\nrecord after these two songs, but I don’t. That’s because the final
\nfour songs progressively get better.<\/p>\n

The singles “Foolin'” and “Rock Of Ages” capture
\narena rock to its fullest. The way Joe Elliott hangs onto the “f”
\nin “foolin'” has been imitated, but rarely done as perfectly as
\nElliott while drummer Rick Allen’s trademark cowbell intro has been
\na requirement for drummers learning the instrument.<\/p>\n

“Comin’ Under Fire” is what “Die Hard The Hunter” is
\nnot — well-arranged and crafted. Following that is the pre-writing
\nfor Hysteria<\/i> material with “Comin’ Under Fire” and “Action!
\nNot Words.” Both tracks seem to be ahead of the other material on
\nthis release. Finally, “Billy’s Got A Gun” could have been a
\nclich\u00c3\u00a9 piece of garbage. Luckily, Def Leppard makes it the
\nmoodiest piece on this release and a real gem.<\/p>\n
