{"id":40099,"date":"2006-12-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-12-30T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/a-charlie-brown-christmas-2\/"},"modified":"2006-12-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2006-12-30T00:00:00","slug":"a-charlie-brown-christmas-2","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/a-charlie-brown-christmas-2\/","title":{"rendered":"A Charlie Brown Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Come Christmas time, one is guaranteed to experience a few things: egg nog, holiday traffic, sitting on Santa\u2019s lap at the mall, watching 24 hours of <em>A Christmas Story<\/em> on TBS, and if you\u2019re lucky not getting socks for a present. One of these yearly rituals is the inevitable viewing of <i>A Charlie Brown Christmas<\/i>, an all-time classic. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, the music for <i>A Charlie Brown Christmas<\/i> has become almost as well known as the animated special itself. In fact I\u2019d wager that the music is many kids\u2019 first exposure to jazz, I know it was for me. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, this isn\u2019t <i>Bitches Brew<\/i> jazz-fusion we\u2019re talking about here, this album is much more accessible. These Christmas songs are well known, and some of the original numbers have become part of the Christmas canon themselves. Hell there\u2019s even a Beethoven composition for classicists. <\/p>\n<p>The one song that everybody knows from <i>A Charlie Brown Christmas<\/i> is the ubiquitous \u201cLinus And Lucy.\u201d This track essentially has become the <em>Peanuts<\/em> theme song over the decades, and with just cause. The happy melody and famous piano riff worm their way into your head and set up a residence at a cheap condo near your hypothalamus. <\/p>\n<p>Almost as famous is \u201cChristmas Time Is Here.\u201d Decidedly less happy, this track is forever linked in my mind to a depressed Charlie Brown. That\u2019s what 20 years or so of watching that movie do to you. Yet this track is the perfect example of why <i>A Charlie Brown Christmas<\/i> works.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Guaraldi really does an excellent job throughout this album of capturing the essence of the characters. There\u2019s the unbridled enthusiasm with \u201cLinus And Lucy,\u201d the less than excited \u201cChristmas Time Is Here\u201d the childlike innocence of \u201cHark The Herald Angels Sing.\u201d These tracks are not randomly compiled, but performed with the intention of creating a true soundtrack for the movie. After 50 years or so, it\u2019s obvious Guaraldi was on the money. <\/p>\n<p>Cementing the status of this record is the fact that it is so well performed. I do not proclaim to be a jazz expert, but this is the kind of jazz normal people can enjoy. One of the knocks I hear against jazz time and time again is its length, and \u201cboring\u201d quality. It\u2019s impossible to get bored with <i>A Charlie Brown Christmas<\/i>; the performances are tight and concise. The longest song here clocks in at six minutes, a more than reasonable length. The fact that this record was crafted for an hour long special probably helped in that regard tremendously. <\/p>\n<p>Look, the cartoon is a classic, the album is a classic, there\u2019s really nothing more to say on the matter.
