Otherwise, you\u2019re just another folkie at the coffeehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Votolato has an uncommon ability to stick out, though. The scents of fellow Nor\u2019wester Elliot Smith, Simon &#038; Garfunkel and various members of the early alt-country scene help give his own weary groan a familiar aroma.<\/p>\n<p>Strong, clever and catchy lyrics set up the 12 three-minute soundtracks that alternate between scenes of summer love and autumn benders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing to stay up all night for the rest of my life \/ \u2019Til the lines around my eyes grow deeper and more defined \/ You might ask me aren\u2019t you dead inside and so damn tired \/ I\u2019ll say I have no idea, I\u2019m not sleeping until after the dying is over,\u201d Votolato sings on \u201cPortland Is Leaving,\u201d one of a handful standout tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Album opener \u201cWhite Daisy Passing\u201d is an acoustic gem that begs \u201cPlease slow it down \/ There\u2019s a secret magic past world \/ That you only notice when you\u2019re looking back at it \/ All I wanna do is turn around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Texas native slides some tasty pedal steel guitar over the Uncle Tupelo-flavored \u201cThe Night\u2019s Disguise\u201d and \u201cTennessee Train Tracks.\u201d The ballad-y \u201cShe Was Only In It For The Rain\u201d and \u201cWhere We Left Off\u201d add a traditional folk flavor but weaken the overall blend.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most impressive is <em>Makers<\/em>\u2019 brevity, given the 18 months Votolato put into his fourth full-length.
