So does New York\u2019s beloved Interpol\u2019s signing on to a big record label mean anything to us? No, not as far as the group\u2019s music is concerned, it doesn\u2019t. On Our Love To Admire<\/i>, the band\u2019s third effort, Interpol still finds itself in the same mold as it did on the first two records, playing the part of a post-grunge, lesser-depressed and more grandiose Joy Division. Nothing much has changed since Antics. <\/p>\n
The jump from the somewhat dreamy and delightfully unpredictable Turn On The Bright Lights <\/i>to a very dark and gritty Antics<\/i> was clearly a big one, showing a huge change in the production. But from Antics<\/i> to Our Love<\/i>, there is hardly any jump at all as there is not much difference in the sound.<\/p>\n

Predictable? Yes. But Our Love<\/i> still has its own little personality. It is less dark and poppier than either Bright Lights <\/i>or Antics.<\/i> \u201cThe Heinrich Maneuver\u201d is almost a disappointment as a single for fans that waited three long years for an album after Antics.<\/i> A great song, nevertheless, but its liveliness and an \u201cinstant gratification\u201d chorus almost give it a Killers appeal, which is something that the band should not be proud of. And if it is, then perhaps its members should quit making music and take up jobs as record store clerks in NYC. <\/p>\n
True, Interpol was one of the first acts in the post punk\/new wave revivalist movement, but amongst the slew of such acts that cannot recognize even their own songs form those of others, Interpol\u2019s oozing gothic dispositions made them stand out. Any attempt to lighten this mascara is suicide. <\/p>\n
The record\u2019s gloomier side, as signified by tracks like \u201cPioneer To The Falls\u201d and \u201cMammoth\u201d stand up to the classiness of \u201cEvil\u201d or \u201cSlow Hands\u201d and the emotional \u201cNo I In Threesome\u201d and \u201cPeace Is The Trick\u201d are as intensely beautiful as \u201cNot Even Jail\u201d and \u201cNYC.\u201d<\/p>\n
No album by Interpol will ever match the brilliance of its first two records. Our Love <\/i>is a promising effort by a band whose style is so restrictive that any half-decent record they make post-Antics<\/i> should be considered a formidable effort.
