{"id":40437,"date":"2007-08-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/dusty-in-memphis\/"},"modified":"2007-08-25T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-25T00:00:00","slug":"dusty-in-memphis","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/dusty-in-memphis\/","title":{"rendered":"Dusty In Memphis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Dusty Springfield began her career as part of the British folk trio The Springfields and eventually went solo in 1969 with the R&#038;B release <i>Dusty In Memphis.<\/i> <\/p>\n<p>Under the tutelage of legendary producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin, Springfield fused her pop voice with the Memphis soul style and created a unique rhythm &#038; blues sound, resulting in one of the better albums of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Side one of <i>Dusty In Memphis<\/i> contained some of the best late 1960s rhythm and blues this side of Aretha Franklin. \u201cJust A Little Lovin,\u201d \u201cSo Much Love\u201d and I Don\u2019t Want To Hear It Anymore\u201d all feature Springfield\u2019s unique soul stylings while the Memphis Horns provide a background counterpoint. \u201cSon Of A Preacher Man\u201d is one of those perfect songs that comes along every once in a while, and her seductive vocals are singing at its best. <\/p>\n<p>Side two is more pop-ish and nearly as good, except for \u201cThe Windmills Of Your Mind,\u201d which is straight pop and the only mistake on the album, as it is out of context. \u201cNo Easy Way Down\u201d and \u201cI Can\u2019t Make It Alone\u201d are Goffin-King songs that Springfield moves in a soulful direction; rarely have the songs of Carole King been interpreted in such a unique way. \u201cJust One Smile\u201d is another highlight.<\/p>\n<p>The 1999 re-release contains 14 bonus songs, 11 of them from a 1971 Atlantic album that was never released. \u201cThat Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho),\u201d which was a hit for Blood, Sweat &#038; Tears, is slowed way down and given a fine blues vocal. \u201cWhat Do You Do When Love Dies\u201d contains a pop vocal treatment on the melody and a R&#038;B vocal on the refrain; it is an unusual and wonderfully creative song. \u201cWillie and Laura Mae Jones\u201d is straight out the Aretha Franklin songbook, \u201cAll The Kings Horses\u201d and \u201cI Found My Way\u201d show gospel traits and \u201cNatchez Trace\u201d is about as rocking as Dusty Springfield gets. However, such standards as \u201cMake It With You\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019ve Got A Friend\u201d are given a typical pop treatment and pale next to the rest of the material on the album. <\/p>\n<p>Dusty Springfield died at age 59 in 1999, 10 days before her induction into the Rock &#038; Roll Hall Of Fame.
