{"id":40671,"date":"2008-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/chase-this-light\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T11:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T11:20:12","slug":"chase-this-light","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/chase-this-light\/","title":{"rendered":"Chase This Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">How many punk-pop bands can get away with quoting Lionel Richie *and* Judas Priest?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p>Showing they\u2019ve grown up &#8212; but not too much &#8212; Jimmy Eat World manages on their rather mature-and-polished-feeling 2007 release <i>Chase The Light<\/i> to nonetheless hark back to the manic brilliance of 2001\u2019s \u201dA Praise Chorus,\u201d eschewing kick-starting your rock and roll heart for a little dancing on the ceiling in the anthemic album opener \u201cBig Casino.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a credit to their brand of earnest, dewy-eyed guitar rock that Jimmy Eat World can get away with this sort of cheeky steal; it comes off as clever and reverent rather than snarky or goofy.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s a tough opening to live up to, though, and while <i>Chase This Light<\/i> has a number of strong moments, it doesn\u2019t feel entirely up to the task.\u00a0 Among the stronger moments here, \u201cAlways Be\u201d stands out, a prototypically urgent, melodic and thoughtful rocker whose singalong chorus begs for airplay.\u00a0 \u201cCarry You\u201d offers another very pretty &#8212; and catchy &#8212; melody line, and \u201cElectable (Give It Up)\u201d echoes the hard, punky edge of older numbers like \u201cPain\u201d and \u201cBleed American,\u201d though the group\u2019s fury is channeled pretty thoroughly into melody this time out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Second half standouts include \u201cHere It Goes,\u201d which throws in bells and a rather techno opening before dropping into a more standard Jimmy layered-vocals-and-sunny-melody tune punctuated by a sharp, repeating riff.\u00a0 Title track \u201cChase This Light\u201d turns up the earnest \u2013 not to mention the multi-part-vocal-harmonies-over-repeating-guitar-figure-over-stuttering-drums motif &#8212; and creates a kind of uber-Jimmy anthem that\u2019s both somewhat satisfying and altogether familiar.\u00a0 Farther on, the circular hook and hammering rhythm section of \u201cFirefight\u201d sounds like much of the first half of <i>Futures<\/i>, just a little sunnier.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And there\u2019s the crux of what seems to have happened here.\u00a0 More than one reviewer criticized <i>Futures<\/i> &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/futures\/\">my pick for album of the year<\/a>  in 2005 &#8212; as too dark and melancholy, but this occasionally starry-eyed optimist found it beautiful and compelling.\u00a0 <i>Chase This Light<\/i>, by contrast, feels a little too bright and polished.\u00a0 It\u2019s fervent, yes, but never reaches the raw emotional highs or lows of <i>Bleed American<\/i> and <i>Futures<\/i>, instead staying inside the safer middle. \u00a0\u00a0In the end, it\u2019s shinier than both of the albums that preceded it, but not as satisfying as either.\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":29143,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"artist":[6683],"rating":[5615],"class_list":["post-40671","review","type-review","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","artist-jimmy-eat-world","rating-rating-b"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/review\/40671","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/review"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/review"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=40671"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/review\/40671\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/29143"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=40671"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"artist","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artist?post=40671"},{"taxonomy":"rating","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/rating?post=40671"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
