{"id":41366,"date":"2009-02-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/desire-walks-on\/"},"modified":"2009-02-19T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-19T00:00:00","slug":"desire-walks-on","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/desire-walks-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Desire Walks On"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Following Heart\u2019s return to the spotlight in 1985, their career seemed to be a cycle of hits and misses in terms of their studio work. For the return to form that was <i>Heart<\/i>, there was the stumble out of the gate that was <i>Bad Animals<\/i>. Likewise, for the power that was <i>Brigade<\/i>, there was a \u201cwhat do we do <i>now<\/i>?!?\u201d vibe with <i>Desire Walks On<\/i>, which is not the worst album in Heart\u2019s discography, but is easily the most confusing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a sense, one can\u2019t blame Ann and Nancy Wilson for musical confusion, as the scope of popular music had turned towards grunge &#8212; a totally <i>different<\/i> Seattle flavor than what Heart had been offering up for nearly 20 years &#8212; and their style of rock didn\u2019t really seem to fit with the popular scene. But Heart had seen cycles of popular music change often in their careers; one could argue that they should have known how to ride this one out as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But one <i>can<\/i> blame the Wilsons and their expanding crew of songwriters for selecting a batch of songs that presents Heart in a very <i>laissez-faire<\/i> mood, as if they\u2019re merely going through the motions, hoping to keep some of the momentum they built up with <i>Brigade<\/i> going. Too bad this approach fails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ignoring the two short snippets of music that bookend this disc, the opening salvo of \u201cBlack On Black II,\u201d \u201cBack To Avalon,\u201d and \u201cThe Woman In Me\u201d just fails to capture any of the power and emotion that Heart had become known for at the high points of their career. \u201cBlack On Black II\u201d is an ear-shredding nightmare that showcases Ann Wilson demonstrating how loud she can shriek. That approach didn\u2019t work on <i>Private Audition<\/i>, and it certainly doesn\u2019t work on this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The first ray of hope that this disc has is a track with the unfortunate title of \u201cMy Crazy Head.\u201d I know the title means little, but building a song around a chorus with these words is a little off-putting; fortunately, the rest of the songwriting and the performance are strong enough to carry it through. Likewise, I know that \u201cWill You Be There (In The Morning)\u201d is basically a photocopy of \u201cWho Will You Run To\u201d merged with \u201cI Didn\u2019t Want To Need You,\u201d but the thing is, the formula still works, and it works well. Had this track been the lead-off on the disc (as well as the first single), chances are that the rest of the disc might have had a better flow, and the album would be actually remembered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What is a shame is that these are the only two standout tracks on <i>Desire Walks On<\/i>. It\u2019s not that this is a bad disc, it\u2019s that the music is so bland and forgettable that despite some decent musical performances, it fails to excite the listener the way that other Heart songs and albums have had the power to do. Heart was a band built on the raw emotion and power of rock music, and was able to convey this, even in their ballads, on a good portion of their recorded output. Sadly, they\u2019re not able to even get themselves excited on this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Of all Heart\u2019s albums, <i>Desire Walks On<\/i> counts as their biggest disappointment. The band had so much promise of great things to come in what was the latter half of their second coming. It\u2019s such a shame that they let it slip through their fingers and strings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":29759,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"artist":[5634],"rating":[11204],"class_list":["post-41366","review","type-review","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","artist-heart","rating-rating-c-minus"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/review\/41366","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/review"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/review"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=41366"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/review\/41366\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/29759"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=41366"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"artist","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artist?post=41366"},{"taxonomy":"rating","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/rating?post=41366"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
