{"id":41444,"date":"2009-04-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/live-10\/"},"modified":"2009-04-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-10T00:00:00","slug":"live-10","status":"publish","type":"review","link":"https:\/\/dailyvault.adishjain.in\/index.php\/reviews\/live-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">Mott The Hoople\u2019s final album <i>Live<\/i> is one of those discs that\u2019s greater than the sum of its parts, or some other equally tired-sounding reviewer clich\u00e9.\u00a0 The point is, if we\u2019re honest about it, the history surrounding <i>Live<\/i> is at least as interesting and dramatic as anything on the album itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">Five years and many changes down the road, the quintet that Ian Hunter was the last founding member to join had been left almost entirely in his creative hands.\u00a0 And while that responsibility weighed heavily on his shoulders &#8212; as his hospitalization for exhaustion at the end of his tenure with Mott would attest &#8212; he didn\u2019t go down without a fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\"><i>Live<\/i> features a handful of songs from two different shows taken from <i>The Hoople<\/i> tour of 1973-74.\u00a0 The first half (a.k.a. side one) plucks five songs from the group\u2019s historic May 1974 performances at New York\u2019s Uris Theater, the first rock and roll residency ever held on Broadway.\u00a0 The second half (a.k.a. side two) features just three cuts &#8212; one a 16-minute medley &#8212; from the group\u2019s notorious December 14, 1973 date at London\u2019s Hammersmith Odeon, a gig that descended into utter chaos as the house manager tried to bring the curtain down on Mott\u2019s encore of \u201cWalking With A Mountain,\u201d only to end up in an onstage wrestling match with the group\u2019s manager as the band played on, into the teeth of a virtual riot of roadies, house security and fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">Both Queen and Aerosmith opened for Mott on <i>The Hoople<\/i> tour chronicled here and both were openly influenced by the group\u2019s over-the-top theatrics and total commitment to the song.\u00a0 And that exuberant embrace of rock and roll excess comes bleeding through your speakers on this album, but much like the band itself, the energy and purity of intention isn\u2019t always enough to rescue the whole thing from the anarchy at its core.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">The <st1:state w:st=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\"><st1:place w:st=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> cuts are highlighted by the piledriving opener \u201cAll The Way From Memphis,\u201d which sets the stage beautifully but perhaps overpromises.\u00a0 \u201cSucker\u201d follows, a relatively obscure track that you wouldn\u2019t really expect to see included in such an edited-down version of a Mott show\u2026 and then you get an otherwise unreleased six-minute piano ballad (\u201cRest In Peace\u201d)\u2026!\u00a0 Evidence, if nothing else, of the consequences of their label\u2019s refusal to issue a double LP as the band intended, or even to include any tracks from <i>The Hoople<\/i> here.\u00a0 \u201cAll The Young Dudes\u201d and \u201cWalking With A Mountain\u201d at least do appear finishing off the <st1:state w:st=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\"><st1:place w:st=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> set, and they\u2019re everything you\u2019d want them to be, firmly delivered and winning a frenzied response from the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">The <st1:city w:st=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\"><st1:place w:st=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">London<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> side kicks off nicely with a sharp, heavy \u201cSweet Angeline\u201d but then segues into the rather forgettable \u201cRose,\u201d a B-side from the <i>Mott<\/i> sessions.\u00a0 In a word, huh?\u00a0 The big medley redeems things quickly, though, as the band storms through Mott\u2019s \u201cJerkin\u2019 Crocus,\u201d \u201cOne Of The Boys,\u201d \u201cRock\u2019n\u2019Roll Queen\u201d and \u201cViolence,\u201d throwing in snippets along the way of the Kinks\u2019 \u201cYou Really Got Me,\u201d the Beatles\u2019 \u201cGet Back,\u201d David Bowie\u2019s \u201cJean Genie\u201d and the classic oldie \u201cWhole Lotta Shakin\u2019 Goin\u2019 On.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">Of the many oddities of this set, none is greater than the bizarre track list.\u00a0 Two heretofore unreleased cuts on an eight-song live LP?\u00a0 No recording of the terrific song whose performance is memorably pictured on the back cover of the album (\u201cMarionette\u201d)?\u00a0 The infamous \u201criot edition\u201d of \u201cWalking With A Mountain\u201d not included?\u00a0 No \u201cHymn For The Dudes\u201d or \u201cGolden Age Of Rock\u2019n\u2019Roll\u201d or \u201cRoll Away The Stone\u201d or \u201cSweet Jane\u201d?\u00a0 Ah, but there was a happy ending for listeners, if not for Mott itself.\u00a0 The 30th anniversary edition of <i>Live<\/i> restored the bulk of both shows onto two full CDs, including all of the omitted tracks mentioned above.\u00a0 It\u2019s definitely the version you want!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">As for the aforesaid unhappy ending for Mott, after the tour chronicled here, the group set about putting together a new single &#8212; \u201cSaturday Gigs,\u201d the band\u2019s final recording \u2013 in the process dispensing with second-generation guitarist Ariel Bender and bringing in former Bowie ax-slinger Mick Ronson, the third in a succession of stellar guitar players in the group.\u00a0 Ronson\u2019s tenure in the band was the briefest yet, though, as they held on just five months and <a href=\"%5C%22%5C%22http:\/\/www.mickronson.com\/mrgigs.shtml%5C%22%5C%22\">18 legendary gigs<\/a>  more, until Hunter, in New York to finalize the purchase of his new American home, was hospitalized for mental exhaustion.\u00a0 Word came shortly that Hunter and Ronson would leave the group and begin work together on an Ian Hunter solo album, the formal launch of a musical partnership that would endure until Ronson\u2019s untimely death in 1993.\u00a0 [Editor\/author\u2019s note: This and many other aspects of the Mott story related in the reviews appearing here owe a great debt to Adrian Perkins and <a href=\"%5C%22%5C%22http:\/\/www.hunter-mott.com\/history\/mth_story.html%5C%22%5C%22\">www.hunter-mott.com<\/a>.] <\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">Remaining original members Overend Watts (bass), Dale (Buffin) Griffin (drums) and late arrival Morgan Fisher (keyboards) would unfortunately and unsuccessfully soldier on for a time under the shortened moniker Mott, pulling in whatever singers and guitarists would play along, but the ballad of Mott The Hoople truly ended when Hunter and Ronson departed in December 1974.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"\\\"\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"MsoNormal\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\"\\\"\">I could spend another page here declaiming in bold and glowing tones all that the mercurial Mott meant to the scene they inhabited, their profound influence on the musical landscape of their era and the like, but they would probably hate that sort of thing.\u00a0 They never wanted to be anything fancy; by their own admission none of them were even very good on their instruments when they began recording.\u00a0 They were just a rock and roll band that &#8212; all considerations of commercial success aside &#8212;
