Although wisely left out of Fear Of A Black Planet<\/i>, the four cuts on Nil Recurring <\/i>are in no shape or form embarrassments. But despite being just six tracks long, the length of FOABP seems just right; nevertheless, the rejects, which ended up on Nil Recurring<\/i>, are every bit as great.<\/p>\n
It is for good reason that Porcupine Tree promoted this EP seriously, playing tracks off of it on the second leg of the FOABP<\/i> tour (and they\u2019re still doing so on the tour for their latest, The Incident<\/i>). This is a serious record. Similar to FOABP, <\/i>the cohesively arranged tracks maintain a sense of continuity, giving this EP its own conceptual flair. Emerging from the same gene as Black Planet, Nil Recurring<\/i> is a prog-metal journey, with no cut shorter than six minutes. It doesn\u2019t feature mellower numbers \u2013 unlike Fear<\/i>, which had quite a few of these: \u201cMy Ashes,\u201d \u201cSentimental,\u201d the third part of \u201cAnesthetize\u2026\u201d <\/i>In fact, <\/i>\u201cNormal,\u201d which could be considered an alternate version of \u201cSentimental\u201d (it shares the same musical theme and chorus), is nowhere as melodic and poppy.<\/p>\n
The lyrical aspect of Nil Recurring<\/i> is as disinteresting as the album it spawned from. The one letdown of that disc \u2013 its clumsy melodramatic lyrics \u2013 is also the only weakness of this record: \u201cPrescription drugs they help me through the day \/ And that restraining order keeps me well at bay \/ But what\u2019s normal now anyway?\u201d (\u201cNormal\u201d); \u201cWell, I could be boarding an aircraft \/ With a bomb concealed in somebody\u2019s briefcase \/ And my body will spread through the heavens, across the sky\u201d (\u201cWhat Happens Now?\u201d). But like FOABP<\/i>, the weak lyrics are eclipsed by the band\u2019s brilliant songwriting and musicianship.<\/p>\n
It wouldn\u2019t have been that big of a deal if these cuts were crammed into Fear Of A Black Planet<\/i>, but it definitely would have been a mistake if they were never released at all.
