The day is coming when every riff and every musical theme will have been explored, and it will be a band\u2019s job to do one of two things: come up with something new and refreshing or simply play material that does more borrowing from others than fresh creation. When was the last time we truly had something new and refreshing in the world of metal? Don\u2019t say Metallica. Don\u2019t say Slayer. Sure as hell don\u2019t say Korn or Linkin Park.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, you can\u2019t say Rev Theory either. After only two tracks, you can\u2019t help but suspend your familiarity with what is typically played on rock stations in order to get through these two tracks. <\/o:p><\/p>\n

First of all, you have to forget the clich\u00e9 \u2018let\u2019s get excited please\u201d lyrics of opener \u201cHell Yeah,\u201d especially when vocalist Rich Luzzi pleads, \u201cGive me a hell! \/ Yeah! Stand up right now \/ Get ready to go!\u201d \u2013 otherwise, you\u2019ll go nuts. You just have to imagine yourself with thousands of your closest friends at a concert with a fist in the air. No one at a concert hearing those words will think, \u201cOh that is so familiar.\u201d There is energy in this track, which I liked. Second of all, when you get to track two and listen to Luzzi sing about a girl who is his \u201cFavorite Disease,\u201d you have to forget about hearing that phrase in countless other songs — I\u2019m thinking specifically of Nickelback\u2019s use of the phrase in \u201cFigured You Out\u201d — because, again, it\u2019s just not worth it. You can survive these two songs if you just go with the flow. Just don\u2019t expect mind-melting molten metal \u00e0 la Tool or Dream Theater and you\u2019ll be okay.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Title track \u201cLight It Up\u201d comes next. The guitars are playing a crunchy thick pseudo- \u201cEnter Sandman\u201d riff during the majority of the song. Luzzi sings about \u201cthe whiskey running through my veins \/ So cut me open add the fuel to the fire \/ Your daddy tells you not to play my game \/ But what I\u2019m selling baby she can\u2019t deny.\u201d If it weren\u2019t for the significant time and thought behind the guitar solo from Julien Jorgensen, I\u2019d be skipping this track.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not until \u201cBroken Bones\u201d that I began to enjoy this release. The guitars are acoustic and soulful at the beginning of the song before transitioning to electric. The lyrics are better and more \u00a0tolerable in comparison to the first three tracks. This begins a quartet of strong songs athat continues with \u201cKill The Headlights,\u201d \u201cTen Years,\u201d and \u201cWanted Man.\u201d \u00a0\u201cWanted Man\u201d could have easily been the lead-off track for this release. There is depth in Luzzi\u2019s ponderings when he asks what his life will be like in the future during \u201cTen Years.\u201d \u00a0Last track \u201cFar From Over\u201d is strong as well.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

For what Rev Theory seems to be trying to do \u2013 write energetic music that makes people happy \u2013 they are successful.
