John Denver died in a small plane crash over a decade ago, yet he still has multitudes of fans in the United States and in many parts of the world. Still, many people forget just how popular he was during the \u201870s. He sold millions of albums, including three that reached the number one position in the U.S. His 1973 Greatest Hits <\/i>album sold in excess of 14 million copies in the United States and Canada alone. His singles, \u201cSunshine On My Shoulder,\u201d \u201cAnnie\u2019s Song,\u201d \u201cThanks God I\u2019m A Country Boy,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Sorry,\u201d and \u201cCalypso\u201d all topped Billboard Magazine\u2019s <\/i>singles charts while \u201cTake Me Home, Country Roads\u201d just missed at number two.<\/p>\n

Eagle Rock Entertainment has just issued Around The World Live<\/i>, which is a massive five DVD box set of unreleased concert material plus two documentaries. It all clocks in at just less than nine hours, which is a lot of John Denver.<\/p>\n

Anyone purchasing this set should realize that because it presents him in a concert setting from different periods of his career, there is bound some repetition. An example of this would be the six performances of \u201cTake Me Home, Country Roads.\u201d Even his fan base would be well advised to enjoy this set over a period of days rather than just plowing through it in one or two sittings.<\/p>\n

Disc one takes you down under for his 1977 Australian concert in front of 30,000 people. This is John Denver at the height of his popularity. I was immediately impressed with the quality of his voice and his relaxed demeanor in front of so many people. While many of his hits are performed, he also digs into his catalogue to present some lesser-known material, such as \u201cCome And Let Me Look In Your Eyes,\u201d \u201cEagle And The Hawk,\u201d and \u201cSinging Skies And Dancing Waters.\u201d The concert concludes with the song that jumpstarted his career. \u201cLeaving On A Jet Plane\u201d was a number one hit for Peter, Paul & Mary in the fall of 1969 and as its composer, Denver received a large amount of recognition.<\/p>\n

Disc two finds him in Japan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> in 1981. This is a fairly laidback set that mostly concentrates on his better-known material. \u201cTake Me Home, Country Roads,\u201d \u201cFly Away,\u201d \u201cRocky Mountain High,\u201d \u201cAnnie\u2019s Song,\u201d and \u201cSunshine On My Shoulder\u201d are all performed before an appreciative audience. <\/p>\n

He travels to England<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> for disc three. The hits had stopped by then, but he has matured as a live performer and still has the ability to command an audience. Some of the more interesting songs include \u201cThe Harder They Fall,\u201d \u201cShanghai Breezes,\u201d \u201cMy Sweet Lady,\u201d and \u201cPerhaps Love.\u201d <\/p>\n

Disc four begins with a solo acoustic performance recorded in Japan<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> in 1984. I am always interested to hear an artist perform his material sans any support, except what he holds in his hands. His material is made for this type of approach, and he successfully presents seventeen of his songs in a simple and effective manner. Also included on this disc are his Farm Aid performances from 1985, 1987, and 1990.<\/p>\n

The final disc contains two of his documentaries. He has always been an environmental activist and his 1990 Earth Day documentary is passionate if dated. His 1972 Day At The Bighorn<\/i> remains interesting in its exploration of the wildlife of the Rocky Mountain region.\u00a0 The visual quality of the set is excellent and has undergone remastering and restoration. <\/p>\n

Around The World Live <\/i>is a career-spanning document of the live John Denver.
