It presents the first two decades in the career of Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame member Jackson Browne.

There have been a proliferation of DVD releases lately, with many being hastily assembled affairs. Jackson Browne: Going Home was originally broadcast by the Disney Channel in 1994 as a television special. It has now been resurrected in DVD format by Eagle Rock Entertainment.

The first two decades of Browne’s career contain most of his best known material. This release wisely focuses upon this music, mixing his classic songs with some obscurities, which create a nice and interesting combination. Each song is presented live with commentary in-between, which coalesces into a complete and riveting documentary.

Browne’s basic backing band consists of guitarist Mark Goldenberg, drummer Mauricio Lewak, bassist Kevin McCormick, percussionist Luis Conte, vocalist Valerie Carter, guitarist Scott Thompson, and organist Jeff Young.

Many times I forget what a wonderful voice Jackson Browne has, particularly during the first part of his career. His relaxed style also helps present his music well.

His performances of “Doctor My Eyes,” “For Everyman,” “Before The Deluge,” “Lives In The Balance,” and “Running On Empty” are straightforward and immediately recognizable.

There are a number of interesting performances. He composed “Take It Easy,” which was made famous by The Eagles. Browne gives it a much simpler presentation using only his acoustic guitar and a violin in support. It is a brilliant, offbeat performance. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame named the song as one the 500 songs that shaped rock ‘n’ roll. He also gives a nice interpretation of the old Dylan/Hendrix classic “All Along The Watchtower.” Meanwhile, his “Good Morning Little Mutant” is always welcome.

In addition, there are guest interviews/performances by the likes of Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, David Lindley, Graham Nash, and Jennifer Warnes. My only complaint is the lack of liner notes or any additional information about the history of the performance. It is just a basic container with a song list and some notes on the reverse. Still, that is minor when compared to the quality of the music.

Jackson Browne is one of those musicians who always appear laidback and relaxed, which is part of his charm. Going Home is an excellent visual presentation of the career of an important American rock musician.

[6757
5617
post-42126","review","type-review","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","artist-jackson-browne","rating-rating-b-plus
["GET
