I can\u2019t help but like the HorrorPops, a Danish band that dabbles in psychobilly, punk, and rock ‘n\u2019 roll. Lead singer Patricia Day plays upright bass and is like a more dangerous version of Gwen Stefani. Her husband and lead guitarist Kim Nekroman once fashioned a bass from a child\u2019s coffin for his other band, Nekromantix. Day and Nekroman, along with drummer Henrik Niedermeier, became popular as the HorrorPops in Copenhagen with songs like \u201cGhouls\u201d and \u201cPsychobitches Outta Hell.\u201d All in all, they’re a wholesome group for the family, assuming your family is crazy. <\/p>\n
What\u2019s funny is that the band merely flirts with horror themes. \u201cGhouls\u201d isn\u2019t about the undead: \u201cThey\u2019re always there to buy me a drink \/ They\u2019re always there to drive me home \/ But their hands always kind of slips \/ From my shoulders down to my tits.\u201d I find it clever that Day compares douchebags to the living dead (I also like how she sings \u201ctits\u201d). Less clever is \u201cWhat\u2019s Under My Bed,\u201d which concerns being afraid of the dark.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
The HorrorPops work best when they hit the ground running. Day\u2019s bass sets the tone for \u201cDrama Queen,\u201d a blinding ditty with a remarkable chorus: \u201cYou fall in love too hard too much \/ You fall out of love too hard too soon.\u201d Day pretty much sings the chorus one word at a time, accentuating the pace of the song. It\u2019s rather infectious. <\/p>\n
Like \u201cDrama Queen,\u201d \u201cWhere They Wander\u201d jumps into the tune and doesn\u2019t let up. Day is at her best as a singer on this track; she sounds like she\u2019s about to punch out someone\u2019s teeth. Lyrically, \u201cWhere They Wander\u201d is one of the stronger songs on Hell Yeah!<\/i> It\u2019s a combination of George A. Romero metaphors and the story of how Day and Nekroman got together. <\/p>\n
The main weakness of Hell Yeah! <\/i>is its second half. \u201cKool Flattop\u201d involves exactly what the title says (i.e., a very thin concept), but the song drags at three minutes. Tracks like \u201cPsychobitches Outta Hell\u201d and \u201cEmotional Abuse\u201d don\u2019t have the fast tempo that serves the best material on this album so well (plus, \u201cEmotional Abuse\u201d is a bit off-putting and whiny for a band that also does \u201cDrama Queen\u201d). Thankfully, \u201cDotted With Hearts,\u201d which hearkens back to 1950s rock n\u2019 roll, and \u201cHorrorbeach,\u201d a fun surf rock instrumental, somewhat redeem the second half. <\/p>\n
Hell Yeah! <\/i>isn\u2019t original or thoughtful, but it has enough energy and attitude to hold my attention. And while the HorrorPops were popular in Copenhagen, more than likely you\u2019re not going to hear them on the radio. Too bad.
