I don\u2019t usually bother to review compilations, but when they are as good and comprehensive as this one, then I\u2019m happy to make an exception.\u00a0 Sade resurfaced last year after ten years away with their very good Soldier Of Love <\/i>album, which enjoyed massive success \u2013 particularly in the US \u2013 and eventually led to the band\u2019s first world tour in a decade.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
To coincide with the tour, which is just reaching its conclusion here in Australia, the band\u2019s label have released this set to remind us fanatics what a pure class act Sade is, and no doubt to initiate the new fans who were caught up in last year\u2019s hype.\u00a0 The packaging is fantastic and spread over two CD\u2019s is some of the greatest pop\/soul\/R&B music one is ever likely to hear in a single sitting.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
All of the band\u2019s finest moments, including \u201cThe Sweetest Taboo,\u201d \u201cCherish The Day,\u201d \u201cYour Love Is King\u201d and \u201cNo Ordinary Love,\u201d are all here, untouched by the remix wizards in all of their original glory.\u00a0 Some lesser-known tracks like \u201cBullet Proof Soul\u201d and \u201cImmigrant\u201d have been included, and they hold their own alongside the group\u2019s massive hits such as \u201cSmooth Operator\u201d and \u201cBy Your Side.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Considering that this collection spans twenty-seven years, it amazes me how contemporary it all sounds and how the old and new songs blend together so easily.\u00a0 It\u2019s also worth noting that Sade Adu herself not only remains stunning in person; her voice has barely aged either over the course of the journey.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
The most pleasing aspect of this set, though, comes as the second disc nears its conclusion, and that is simply some new songs that were left over from the Soldier Of Love <\/i>sessions.\u00a0 The most surprising of which is a smooth and soulful cover of Thin Lizzy\u2019s \u201cStill In Love With You,\u201d which sounds beautiful and is more in line with the style of 2000\u2019s Lovers Rock <\/i>album.\u00a0 \u201cI Would Never Have Guessed\u201d is a stunning piano-led ballad that features some nice harmony vocals.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
The best of the new songs though is the uber-cool \u201cLove Is Found\u201d which is how modern R&B\/dance tracks should sound.\u00a0 The groove is infectious, and Adu\u2019s delivery is wonderful as she channels a bit of Donna Summer\u2019s classic \u201cI Feel Love.\u201d\u00a0 Jay-Z appears on the remix of \u201cThe Moon And The Sky,\u201d and along with the Neptunes\u2019 remix of \u201cBy Your Side,\u201d they are the only touched-up songs here, although both original versions have also been included. <\/p>\n
The DVD is just as satisfying as it features all of the band\u2019s well scripted and expertly shot videos of all of their finest moments.\u00a0 A few standouts are \u201cNo Ordinary Love\u201d (that features Adu as a mermaid), \u201cParadise,\u201d and the sublime \u201cIs It A Crime.\u201d <\/p>\n
